So apparently I need tutoring in chicken math! Started out with 2 old hens, to see if we were fit parents for chickens. Wanted more, so got 4 chicks, lost 2 ( learned a big lesson). Lost 1 of the old hens, vet said old age (I'm OK with that). First batch of chicks (2)RIR & EE, successfully living with remaining old hen BR. Labor day got 3 BR chicks. Today, went to feed store, alone, HUGE MISTAKE!!!!!

They had BO chicks and they are just too cute to believe and since the other chicks are only a week old WHY NOT, GOT 2 MORE!!!!!!!

And I can't hide them from DH because he has to take care of them this weekend while I'm out of town. YIKES!!!!!!!!!

Is my flock going to be colorful enough? LMAO

You started with 2 and ended up with 8? Hey! Not bad. That's only 4 times as many. Wait'll you hit double digits, the math gets real hairy from there.

I have room for 4-5 chickens in my coop/run. I have 7 chickens. Last weekend we went to Orschlens looking for dog feed containers (found them), and it was all i could do to get out of the store without buying several "rainbow layers" that they had in a bin. Didn't anyone tell them it is September. In Kansas. I thought it was safe to go in there this time of year. They were soooooo cute. I didn't buy any, but it was a near thing.

I guess if I can't part with any of the girls, we will have to build a bigger coop anyway. Maybe next year if it all works out.

It sounds to me like you have the chicken math thing down perfectly. After all you had 2 old hens and since one died, that counts as no hens, and since 2 of the ,chicks didn't make it, 4-2-2, you still don't have any chickens. I, on the other hand, have 7 chickens of the 8 I bought, and any way you count, 8-1 (even -1 again since she died before she arrived) is still 6 and that is still 2 too many for my facilities. sigh.

LOL Thats how chicken math works isnt it?
I went to the feed store for 3 or 4...came home with 8
1 died so went to replace that one came home with 2 more...
went to chicken stock doubled my flock AND came home with hatching eggs...
25 hatched
lost 24 chickens to raccoon attack
got 7 chicks from MPC
got 24 eggs to hatch
2 hatched
got hatching eggs 60...wait no 72
lost 1 chick
lost 2 more to hawk
went to get 2 silkies to go with the others that just hatched came home with 6...
and I still have 72 in the bator due the 27th and the 4th...

Oh and DH has been deployed for all of this, he saw the first couple groups of chickens...knew about the raccoon attack, the MPC order and 60 of the eggs...he thinks Im going to sell all of the chicks that hatch...

so whats that equal? IDK but we love them!

I can see that I'm in very good company! Forgot to say coop holds 6 chickens!

Time to add on, before they get big enough to go outside, which won't be too long here in sunny south florida.

See at first I was thinking that your chicken math was way off because you were being much too restrained with the numbers but now that I see that you already have more chickens than your coop can hold I feel much better!

Additions to coops and additional coops are very important in the chicken math equasions!!!

Looks like you are fully into the whole spell. Next it will be an incubator.

Chicken Math is harsh...

Started with 3 (and only allowed 3 by DH)
2 were roos...left with 1
Ordered 5 from MPC - now have 6
1 was a roo - left with 5
1 died - left with 4
Given 4 white polish eggs - ordered 12 more bantam polish eggs
Hatched 4 white polish - hatched 4 bantam polish - now have 12
2 roos - down to 10
Rehomed 4 white polish - now have 6

problem - coop for 3 - 4 max... need a new coop

I thought your thread title said, "chicken BATH" and I thought... well... I sure have been ITCHING to add more chicks lately, so maybe a chicken BATH would be a good idea...

I got 6 in February all lived but thought they looked a bit lonely in that big coop so I just got 5 more.

Built a bator just for fun and had to test it so there's 5 eggs in there.

Planning on coop #2 in the spring.

Hoping to fill it with bantams to breed.

The best part is dh thinks it's great!!
