Winterizing Nipple Waterers? UPDATE Really? No One Knows?

What kind of nipples are you going to use, if any?
Would be nice if you started a new thread with your experiment parameters and the data from testing.

Horizontal. After reading a lot I don't think the vertical will work that well so I'm skipping that step. If someone wants to donate some I'd be happy to put them inline too I just don't want to buy them since I know I won't use them.

The temps are getting lower and lower! We're in the low teens with wind chill in the negatives, and still the horizontal nipples have yet to freeze! The aquarium heater keeps the water warm and prevents it from freezing, and I have the heater near the bottom of the bucket where the horizontal nipples are installed. All is working very well! I'm super happy with these horizontal nipples!

That's great news!

I have had great results since buying the horizontal nipples. They did not freeze in the temporary horse stall chicken pen... which is unheated by anything but the chicken bodies and the temps got into the low 20's. There is no heater in the bucket yet. Everyone was sold out of the bird bath heaters. The move to one of the horse stalls was necessitated by a big fir tree that "took out" my chicken coop. As my son said, "I wanted a new chicken house anyway".

My birds that were basically outside but in covered yards did freeze even with the horizontal nipples. They will be the first to get supplemental heat when I find some bird bath heaters for sale.

Thankfully, there is a bright light at the end of this frozen tunnel. :)
