Heat lamp for coop...regular light bulb or "black bulb"?

I don't supplement but I do use the deep litter practice to provide a bit of heat. Like many BYC'er's have stated, chickens have lived many years on their own, they can make it in the cold. Dogs and cats do not have the same evolutionary feather coat and need supplementary heat.

For one month, try it, and see if you have problems, if not, save the electricity. If you see frostbite issues supplement.

My family tree has roots in Oconto. The town, not just the county. Shufelts, McCartneys, and Lobergers form the deepest roots, but by marriage there are many others. Any relation? Any ties? Just interested in south-est, central-est Wisconsin.

I remember the place mostly from visiting relatives as a child. Dad and Mom moved south before I was born.

Oh, I think the majority who add a little heat know that their chickens "can make it" without the heat. The animals I have that have fur coats could learn "to make it" as well. I have a golden retriever with a nice undercoat, and I have no doubt that she could make it through a winter in my area in just a dog house. I feel confident that even my very short coated big baby of a great dane would survive (although he might tell me differently

). My cats would echo his sentiment...lol. I think those who choose to add a heating pad to a dog house or cat house, or a bit of heat to a hen house, simply want to help their pets feel more comfortable. It totally baffles me why some people seem so opposed to that???

Sorry OP, about getting away from your question...
