What age can I tell a rooster from a hen with silkies?

I am in the same boat... I think one thing and then something makes me change my mind. My Silkies as I mentioned are 13 weeks old and hardly making any noise and no distuiquishing characteristics... hmmm.. oh well, I take it as they come..

Do you know will Silkie roosters beat up other silkie roosters for dominance?

I would imagine any rooster would I suppose and silkies seem to be determined little blighters lol, although I have had no experience so wouldn't like to say!!

Does any of yours have any kind of wattles??

As of now, nothing... I did start to see a very very small one starting to grow on one... tiny.. The one that I believe is a rooster is a bit larger than the others and it is the most vocal. Plus it appears to have on both sides of his beak by the cheeks two hard growths, like extended beaks that are pointing backward... hard to describe..

What does blighters mean?.. not in Western PA vocab?

I was told that silkies dont roost for some reason. And none of the 12 we have roost. My oldest are 4 months old and I am hoping to get them sexed soon. 1 is friendly and vocal and the other is really shy and not so vocal.

Sorry, forgot where i was for a minute! Erm..... would have liked to have used another word that started with 'b' and ended in 'r' but don't think i would be allowed!!
I should have probably just said determined little chickens!!

Thanks, I will look closely at the combs and the ear lobes. Will roosters have spurs?

Also, since you have silkies roughly the same age, are they roosting yet?... mine are not... they won't even use the ramp to get back in the coop at night, I have to put them in everynight by catching them and carrying them in.. getting old.
I have 5 Silkies that hang out with a Cochin/Sussex pullet. I had to put them in at night for a bit too, but for the most part, she taught them to use the ramp. Also, opening the door to the roost and letting them figure out how to walk down it to get out to their food and water helped a bit, too I’m sure. They are 12 weeks old now and and still don’t “roost.” Maybe it’s because the roosting bars in the coop are too high for them. They aren’t the most agile of birds and because they don’t have the barbicels (thread like filiments that make the feathers straight and stiff) to make flight possible. At 3 months old, they can get about 2 inches off the ground to perch -but that’s about it.

One more thing....mine never roost. They just all cuddle up in a corner of the coop.
I have five Silkies, the four 6 month ones roost on highest perch in playhouse coop, the younger one almost 3 months roosts on middle perch. I was able to tell my roo at about 3 1/2 months, and 2 of the hens at about same time. But the last one I couldn't tell until she laid. The baby sure looks to be a pullet. Its really hard to tell sometimes. I was once told that if it crows, boy, if it lays, girl. Wait and see. :fl LOL Post some pics, might be able to help. Also try posting on the Silkie thread.
