Chicken rehab after dog attack!

I'm amazed at the post by another member who thinks shooting the dogs is the answer. I think this is barbaric and does not resemble anything close to a solution. The problem is the irresponsible owner who lets their dog run free, not the dog who is acting on pure instinct. Please join the rest of us in the current century where we don't solve problems with more violence.

Reba lived in the house for almost a year. She recovered completely (a miracle), except for a limp. I did have some difficulty introducing her back into the flock, as they pecked her. I then put her in the coop inside a wire dog kennel and only let her out with them under supervision. Eventually, they accepted her completely. She is now 4 years old.
I now have another hen which gets picked on quite frequently. So far, she just stays her distance from the rest. If she goes outside with them, they attack her, so she hangs out in the coop by herself......

Bummer. I have heard that when you introduce hens into a flock, you should do it in at least pairs so that it settles a bit. I was planning on doing the same for my recovering girl. :-/

I'm wondering what your neighbor is doing (or not) about the attack. They know their dog did it I think they should offer to pay for her vet bills. At the very least they should sincerely applogize and take whatever measures necessary to see the dog never sets foot on your property again. Do they realize you probably have the right to shoot their dog if he ever goes after your chickens again.

I hope your poor Reba makes. But it won't do much good if the dog comes back.
I have a sweet Golden/malamute mix who was trying to play with me 3 week old jersey giants chicks, completely my fault but we lost one and another is injured.

Stop with the righteousness and help with the request or don't post.

Reba is doing okay. She eats and drinks when I offer her something. It hurts her to try and walk, but she still tries. She uses her wings to balance herself and sometimes uses her beak to push herself up.

I hope the majority of the posters are correct in that she will recover!

Thanks everyone for the encouraging words!
I’m so sorry this happened to you. I just went through this yesterday with my neighbor’s dog. His dog got into my backyard and attacked my dogs three days ago and now my sweet Betty White can’t use her leg. I hoping it is sprained I don’t see anything broken. I told my neighbor three days ago and now my chicken, Betty, which is my sweet girl almost didn’t make it. He acted as if it’s my fault for having chickens. I have five total and my other four were a half block down the street. I’m heart broken!
