Salmon Faverolles

Sooooo I'm sitting here enjoying some delicious tuhmater:) soup and I got to thinking....."Man...I want Salmon Faverolles" So now I'm online looking at pictures of the breed and the best places to get them. But First, I think I should know more about the breed. Could somebody tell me what they're like? Dispositon, egg laying, broodiness, behavior, etc. Please and thank you:bun

Hey,
Check out the Faverolles Thread on BYC. I am the VP of the Faverolles Fanciers so obviously I love the breed ha ha. Check out the new site its in my signature line also. Faverolles are fantastic layers of medium sized tinted or light brown eggs. They are winter hardy birds which is great I have had Faverolles lay through winter without and added light or heat. They are the sweetest and calmest birds I have ever owned. They are great with Children and roosters are rarely aggressive. They can be bullied by other breeds but I have never had this experience my Faverolles have always been on top of the pecking order. Where are you getting your Faverolles Hatchery Faverolles and show and breeder Faverolles can look like two completely different birds.

They are quiet, friendly, gentle birds that can actually become very affectionate towards their keepers and are an ideal breed for children. They are alert, active birds and the hens make very good broodies and mothers. The hens will actually lay prolifically over winter. Chicks grow quickly and develop fast on high quality food and will forage happily from an early age. They thrive in a run and are not good fliers so the fencing doesn\\'t have to be very high. They are able to cope with damp grass better than chickens with more heavily feathered legs and feet but do suffer badly from Scaly Leg mite which causes terrible irritation to the birds. They require high quality feed to maximise meat production. The cocks can weigh in at around 11lb which makes them very good table birds. The small comb and thick feathering make them ideal for cold conditions. Like many other large breeds of hen, they are prone to being bullied by other hens if kept together with other varieties. They live for around 5-7 years.

Awh:) I'm glad they do well in cold. I honestly have no idea where I'm getting them.

I have never had a problem with Scaly legs if you do you can put WD40 of their legs or oil and it will suffocate the mites.

Well, most chickens will get it but with legs buttered up with Vaseline, it can be controlled. Sevin dust will help along too!
