Thinking of raising Quail for meat

Well I bought 15 coturnix from a local fella, and I might end up going back and getting a lot more. I currently keep them in a pretty large tote with a portion of the lid cut up and window screening covering that. So far they are all still alive and well. They are starting to chirp a lot.

I have mine on 28% game feed just for the simple fact it cost the same as 22-26% stuff.
 
@AK Baha I tried raising quail indoors. I had texas a&m in a large bird cage but they only used the bottom of it never went on any branches. My biggest complaint is they stink. I have chickens and I thought the smell was much worse. I ended up moving them outside. How did you make out?

Anything works for coturnix eggs. I have a home made contraption, but have used Hovabators too. They all work but it takes practice so get some eggs and try it. There are many threads here about incubating. Do your research and read a lot, you will be better prepared.

The higher the protein the better for chicks. Adults can do well on the 26%. Try not to go less for coturnix, they need it for their high production rates.

Yes they smell worse than chickens. Keep the bedding clean, keep their feeders and waterers clean too or you will end up with chicks with enteritis. Don't crowd them or they smell worse. I brood everything outside. I don't want any feather dust in my house, I have family members with allergies.

I am an new to quail, but will share my results. I purchased 16 quails Sep 12 that were 3 1/2 weeks old that were identified only as Coturnix quail. I got my first egg Oct. 3. Now Oct 22 getting five eggs per day. I believe most of them were roos. I butchered the roos (10) and on average got 3.8 oz of processed bird. I have not cooked them as yet but plan on that this weekend.

I am pleased, first the eggs which I eat are (in my opinion) better than my chickens eggs (sorry ladies). It take about 3 quail eggs to make one chicken egg and I purchased a quail egg cutter because the eggs are not easy to crack like chicken eggs. I understand the eggs have no "bad" cholesterol. Makes my doctor happy. She almost fell in the floor when I told her I ate 6 eggs a day.

The second benefit I count is the manure. My garden loves the manure.

I plan to continue with the quail. I will order "jumbo" coturnix so that I know my breed well.
