This is today modern ri red that thousands of people buy or order. 99.9/8 of people on this site have this bird . I just love them I think they are pretty and they lay lots of eggs. bob

Oh my, been down in the dumps a little for the past week or so. Something got into my large coop of layers. Didn't know at first whether it was a coon or fox. Well after the 3rd night of being raided I was working down around the coop and saw some feathers sticking out off the edge of the coop roof. Pulled the feathers and it was the bones, feathers and feet of a rhode island red hen. Must have climbed the tree with it and dropped it on the roof. I lost approx 15 different hens. Didn't take one rooster. Anyway, Tuesday I ordered what they call the nite guard (4 of them) and have had no problems since. I put them around the coop Wednesday and so far everything is fine. Just made me sick.

I'm so glad that I have my young ones in a more secure place and haven't left them out of their coop yet. I just put my oldest Mohawks outside Wednesday night but they are totally enclosed and my youngest Mohawks and Don Nelson lines are still in my house. They got my Dan Powell gold laced brahma hens and some of my juvenile NH's also. Oh well, I guess we have to expect this sometimes.

Sure do hope that everyone's birds are coping with this heat wave okay. I did have 3 of my RC RIR young to die from the heat. So far everything else seems to be doing okay.

Hey there Bob,

You and Matt better quit talking about this until I get my birds from him later. I sure don't want that mixture mixed in with mine. Took to long to get these and sure don't want to mess them up like that. ha,ha. Just joking with you, I really don't think that you or Matt would do this. (I hope anyway). lol

You are right, is really puts you down in the dumps when the "wild things" take advantage of an easy meal.

I was afraid of that so I'm planning on putting wire around the perimeter of the coop. I sure don't want to go through this again. This is the first time in over 5 years that I've had any predator problems. Believe me, I will be changing some things. I sure don't want anything getting anymore of them. I was just talking to a friend of mine in Maryland and he says he has had very good luck with the nite guards for quite a few years. Still, I don't want to take to many chances. Especially with these new young ones that I have coming on.

Took a few pictures of my Nelson juveniles this evening. These are the ones from dinahmoe. First time being outside their new coop. Notice the black on the hackles of the pullet. This pullet is really growing into a very nice bird. She is as big as any of the young cockerels. The sun was shining really bright so it sort of bleached out the color of their feet/legs in some of the photos. These were 11 weeks old yesterday.

Sorry this one is a little blurred but I knew he wouldn't stand there to long and I was hurrying to get the shot. lol  NO!, the one laying on the ground is not dead, he was dust bathing. They really did enjoy their first outing.

Nice flat back & tail spread on that pullet. Be careful about too much time in full sun as the Red's feathers are easily sun damaged. In the summer months it's important that they be inan area that's primarily shaded.
