Rat Proof Coop

I've been told by vets and rodent professionals that once a rat has ingested the poison there is no need to worry as it has been metabolized in their system and won't harm a dog etc...that may eat it. My Schnauzer has caught and partially eaten quite a few dying rats that have eaten from our bait boxes...

The poison doesn't kill them until they drink water. If you don't keep standing water around (which is a great idea as it breeds mosquito's), the rat will have to leave your property to drink water and that keep the dead rats off your property.

NOT TRUE (well, it is true for some situations but by no means all).

It depends on what KIND of poison was used, and how many of the poisoned rodents the predator eats.

Cats/dogs/etc most certainly do die of eating poisoned prey, not infrequently in fact (although less often now that there are more options in terms of kinds of poisons)

I have seen several solutions that seem promising. I cannot build a wire cage, but love the idea of the 5-gallong bucket trick. I don't see how anything could get out of that - mice or rats since they couldn't scale the slick interior sides. We have three dogs that dig some World War I quality trenches trying to get the rats and I know our Wolfhound mix would eat them if she caught them, so keeping them in a bucket sounds like a good idea. Can anyone give feedback about any downside to this?

I spread cyanne pepper all around that keeps rodents out. I get BIG jugs of it a Sams Club I get the flakes that still has seeds in it (like some folks puts on pizza). It keeps out rats chip monks & mice . that all I do . I have tryed for years, I have tried , traps, poison, wire A cat, shooting, ect. & this is the only thing I have had an success with. you just have to make a circle & do it a few times & the just plain old GO AWAY!
