What do coturnix like to eat?

And here I thought everyone was ignoring my question. I feel alittle better now. I give it to my chickens when they are molting or kept inside to long in the winter because of the weather. They say it has quite a bit of protein in it. I was just wondering if the quails can break up the seeds and get to the nut inside. Although the chickens eat them whole. Sorry by the way for the confusion. By the way what is ROFLOL?
Oh and can they have cat food? They say chickens really shouldn't because of the salt, but I've seen it mentioned for quails often.

WELL MS BECKY, I DONT SEED WHY THEY WOULDNT EAT SUNFLOWER SEEDS THO I HAVE NEVER TRIED THEM. IF YOU ARE CONCERNED GIVE IT TO THEM SHELLED SO THEY CAN ACTUALLY DIGEST THE SEED ITSELF. AS FAR AS CAT FOOD? I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY FOLKS ARE INFATUATED WITH THE IDEA OF FEEDING POULTRY CAT FOOD--- I MEAN I DO HAVE SOME BIRDS THAT CAN PUR, BUT THEY ARE STILL BIRDS

IN AN ECONOMIC LIGHT CAT FOOD IS LIKE 4 OR 5 TIMES AS EXPENSIVE PER POUND AS GAMEBIRD STARTER WHICH IS ACTUALLY FORMULATED FOR GAMEBIRDS. THE BEST ADDITIONAL PROTIEN SOURCE FOR MOST GAMEBIRDS IS SOYBEAN MEAL IF YOU MUST SUPPLIMENT. IT IS GENERALLY CONSIDERED 48-50% PROTIEN DEPENDING ON THE MANUFACTURER. AND ITS THE PROPER FORMULA, SOURCE OF PROTIEN AND OTHER NUTRIENTS YOUR BIRDS REQUIRE. KEEP IN MIND PROTIEN OVERDOSE IS POSSIBLE WITH BIRDS AND CAUSES PREMATURE RENAL (KIDNEY) FAILURE AND DEATH SINCE WE DONT HAVE QUAIL DIALYSIS CLINICS.(BUT MAYBE THERE'S A NEW COVERAGE AVAILABLE THRU THAT WONDERFUL HEALTH CARE REFORM? LOL- SORRY COULDNT RESIST!

)

IF MEMORY SERVES ME CORRECTLY( AND THATS A BIG IF THESE DAYS

) YOU HAVE SOME OLDER BIRDS THAT ARE NOT AS LARGE AS YOUR NEWER STOCK? MAY BE THE OLDER BIRDS ARE JUST PHAROAH SIZED BIRDS WHERE YOUR NEWER ONES ARE JUMBO? IF THATS THE CASE THEY ARE ALL THE SIZE THEY ARE GOING TO BE AND NO SUPPLIMENTS WILL HELP, OR ARE NEEDED. BASICALLY A GOOD GAMEBIRD STARTER IS ALL YOU REALLY NEED. OR IN ANOTHER LIGHT--- A GOOD GAMEBIRD STARTER WILL GIVE THE QUAIL ALL IT NEEDS TO REACH MAXIMUM GENETIC POTENTIAL.

Been busy around here, so I just pop in now and again. Weathers cooled, work to do and all. Time to fill my Freezers.

But above is exactly why I do not give treats except to my Breeders once in a while. Messes with their growth. I have Jumbos not pharoah size. Well, I may have a few pharoah size babies in the bathroom, time will tell. But they are eye candy and I am sure they will get goodies.

Remember I have Big Bad Bertha - the killer quail. She goes on a rampage whenever there is a storm. So I give them a spray of millet to keep her busy instead of attacking other birds. If I put it in one breeder cage, they all get it. It's either that or keep extra cages of males and females to keep her cage filled. Don't want to do that. I spend enough on Gamebird feed as it is.

Thank you. That does help. JJ your memory is dead on. I have three english whites that are half the size of the new jumbos that I just got. I am worried that my gamebird feed doesn't have enough protein and that's why I was wondering. I can't remember what I got this last time, but wanted to up there protein intake to be on the safe side. I'm raising for pets, so I was thinking that (like most men I know) the way to their heart is through their stomach.

I don't think I'll do the cat food, because of the sodium either. I did give the new jumbo's some shelled sunflower seeds and they so far have not eaten them. However I did give them some flax seed and they ate that right up. I personally like to spoil my birds. I know some are not for that, but when my day sucks, they are the first things I turn to, to remember that it's not that bad.
Bird dialysis! That's funny!

Becky I Understand

Its Most Likely Just The Size Difference In The Individual Strains, Your Older Birds Are Traditional English Whites And Just A Smaller Version. Your Newer Ones Are Jumbo Strain.

I Understand Your Position On Spoiling Too, If Thats What Makes Y'all Happy Then I'm All For It. Here On The Other Hand We Play The Numbers Game.... Actually Farming The Stock For Fertile Eggs. When Numbers Count Like That You Must Obey Quail Law--- Change Nothing Unless It Is An Absolute Necessity Because Coturnix Loathe Change And The Punishment They Inflict Can Be Severe And Harsh---- Change My Feed--bad Keeper! No Eggs For You!
smile.png
So There Is The Primary Difference In Background. When Eggs Are Your Financial Life Line You Tend To Obey Quail Law....

I Have Never Offered Sunflower Seeds To Any Of My Birds, But From A Few Other Posts I See On Here It Doesnt Sound As Though They Are Appreciated By The Birds Themselves.

My quail love sunflower seeds, I throw the leftover cockatiel food down to them and they scoff the lot.

Yeah they don't like them. Thanks by the way. I completely understand the quail laws (at least what I've learned so far

) and respect what you and other breeders do. I actually raise a whole lot of things that I will never profit from. I guess I'm a sucker for a sweet face. I always joke that we have the statue of liberty sitting at the end of the driveway for animals.
