Preventing digging under the run fence

I'm with the wire crowd- our first underground flange shows no sign of wear, and the new one was installed a few weeks ago and we're confident it will be the answer-

I'd use the extra wood for bird hospital cages or huddle boxes...

I agree with the others and say you should bury wire. The wood wouldn't be worth the time spent digging. I spent my spare time last week fixing the weak spots in my defenses, principally by burying some old 2"X4" welded wire I had laying around. The wire doesn't need to be new or even straight or long. You can weave many pieces together if needed. You can see what I did at the end of my BYC page: https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=56638

Using wood as the base to fasten the chicken wire too is what my Grandmothers chicken run looked like----but she also incubated her eggs with a kerosene heated incubator. I use the plastic coated buried wire technique myself, (see my BYC page) then fastened the chicken wire to that.

I did this, and took it a little further and used grout to cement all of the pavers together so they can't be moved by even the strongest of predators.
