I took my hen to the vet yesterday and my Dr prescribed her Baytril 22.7mg and said for me to give her a 1/2 a tablet once a day till gone. He raises chickens himself, but said nothing ab me not being able to eat her eggs. Now keep in mind she's only 6 MO and hasn't started laying yet. My concern is 2 things. 1) Ive only given her 1/2 a pill so far. Is the damage already done? And 2) should I just not give her anymore? He gave her this bc he thinks she has a possible infection in her GI track. She hasn't been eating and when she poops its watery. Any advice? Thank you!

Welcome to BYC! My advice is to listen to your vet. FWIW,  I use Baytril and I eat the eggs. :D If you're concerned, call the vet and talk to him about the reason it's banned for use in poultry.

Thank you! He did say that he gives it to his hens all the time. But just to hold consumption of eggs for a month if she should start laying.

So I think my hen that I gave baytril to just started laying. I don't want to toss all of them but I also don't know which one is hers 😔. I gave her the last pill 8 days ago. How long after you gave your girls baytril did you start bk eating the eggs? Thanks for your help!

I believe the wait time is five days.

We are dosing our girls with Baytril right now in their water. Two in the flock have a respiratory infection. We'll be tossing all the eggs for a few weeks.Pains me to do it. Especially as our Cuckoo Marans are just beginning to lay.

If ALL antibiotics are illegal for chickens how are we supposed to treat our girls for infections?  Just let them die?

And, as previously mentioned, we all grew up eating antibiotic treated eggs, didn't we?

Not all antibiotics are banned for use in poultry, it's just a few.
