How do I keep water from freezing in winter?

I use buckets that I get horse treats in. They hold about 2.5 gallons of water.
Nipples in the bottom and aquarium heaters in a hole in the top.
Works great. My chickens like the warmer water when it is really cold and they are only 25 watts.

I would love to see this setup. Looks to be cost effective, and perfect for my girls. Please post pics when he decides to undertake the second waterer....

will do for sure I should have thought about the camera when he did the first one...the thing about me is I never have it on hand when needed lol....or don't think about till too late, I have friends who keep their cameras in their pockets...I should glue one to myself!!

The only issue with the aquarium heaters is that if the water gets too low they will overheat and explode. So just make sure to put it as low as possible and keep the water level well above it. Also, Don't forget to unplug it before you empty the waterer.
I found out the hard way once while doing a water change in my fish tank. Only took about 60 sec and I had shattered glass all over the tank.
