Strong ammonia smell in coop

Hi everyone, thanks for the great tips and info so far. To answer a few questions:

- I have 11 chickens (all layers in there).

- I do have a poop board, but I don't scrape it every day. That's one change it looks like I need to make - daily scraping.

- I don't turn the bedding (pine shavings) myself, but the chickens do a pretty good job of that themselves, and when it starts looking dark, I top it off.

- My flooring is vinyl overtop of PT plywood.

- I don't use stall dry, DE or lime. Looks like I need to look into that.

Thanks again!

Try layering stall dry or DE with wood pellets.

Where do you get wood pellets? Are they used just for chicken coops or are they used for something else and people have just figured out that they work good in coops?

Thanks!

The wood pellets LOOK like the pellets you buy for pellet stoves but these are made for pet bedding. My local feed stores carry them. They might say horse pellets. I learned about them when I had horses.

I now use them to brood chicks in. They are so good at absorbing moisture. I think I pay $4.00 for a 40 lb bag.
