Black widows and chickens

Quote:
Um, actually, I have been bitten, several times. It wasn't on the news for everyone's viewing pleasure, nor did I go to the emergency room.
It was very unpleasant and painful but not what I would consider to be an emergency.

I was bit by a black widow. I was about 7 years old, and from one bite ended up with what looked like 6 cigar burns on my leg. It was nasty, very painful, and took over two weeks to clear up. The Dr.s originally though it was a staff infection of some sort, but we caught the culprit in my bedding, they tested my "wounds" and then the spiders venom. Was a match...

We don't have many BW's here but we do have them. And as long as they are not IN my house, spiders are welcome. We even feed the spiders that live around the outside of my house. And as long as they stay OUTSIDE, they are safe and welcome to stay.

I just found 2 of my 2 month old chicks dead & another one keeps falling & just laying there and crying to me. Went to open their pen to try to figure out why they died and there was a huge black widow on their door and her web attached to their roost. So I'd say if they did try to eat her she'd bite them in a heart beat. I now have a dead rooster and one of my hens so far. Trying to find out information on how to save my other one before it's too late for her. If anyone knows how to save her PLEASE let me know!

Call an ER or vet and ask them.

Tried to get a hold of a couple of vets but one is a farm vet but doesn't deal with chickens and the other one isn't at work on Sundays or at the time of night (close to 8pm) when I called just in case he might be there. This is my 1st flock and I didn't even realize I really had black widows around here. Used to never see any at all, ever. Now I've seen 2 one last summer I killed and destroyed her egg sack and the one this evening. Was surprised the black widow even went into their little coop and made a web on the back of their side door and attached to their roost. Not having much luck finding anything helpful on the internet on how to help a chicken that's been bit, just for people.

I'm sorry I don't know how to help you. All spiders have to die at my house. I have seen some nasty bites and I know of one man that lost his whole leg due to a brown recluse bite.

As others on this thread have said, I too was bitten. I was bitten by a female in my shoe when I was 12. It felt like the flu and the worst muscle cramps and aches. I didn't get antivenom because I was young, it was on an extremity and there is an inherent risk with it. That being said, I have heard of tons of home remedies. My mom tried tons of these. I couldn't tell a difference but I am still here. Also, my great grandfather died from complications of a BW bite. Got him on the bum and refused to go to the doctor. Developed Pneumonia and passed when my dad was a baby. Such are the risks of an outhouse. I don't think there is much you can do but feed the chicken and help it through it.
