Where he sleeps has a low ceiling and extra bedding. It's a small space, easy for him to heat.

I think its personal preference ive got six birds 3 isa browns and 3 white leghorns i installed a cader 1000watt heater with thermostat keeps coop at 40ferinheit no supplemental light but its 8 here now and one of my birds is in a hard molt i choose to heat some chose not too if u choose too it doesnt make you any better or worse than another

I have 7 flocks of chickens. All Mediterranean breeds with huge combs and wattles. It ranges from -19F to 115F here with high humidity year round. The hens have never had a problem at any of those temps. From the low teens and below, the roosters occasionally get frostbitten combs and wattles. I've never lost a bird to cold but have lost Continental and American breeds to heat.
It was 6F here this morning. I'm only putting heat in one building now with 400 watts that kept it above 18F overnight.
Last evening and this morning, that rooster spent most of his time standing in front of the heater.

I live in KY. The temps are supposed to get -10 wind chill over the weekend. My chickens are ok to not have heat??
Perfectly fine.
If their food or water is outside...put up a windblock so they can eat without being blown on.
An even slightly see through plastic sheet or plastic tarp or old window will both block wind and give them a bit of sun heat.
There was another coop fire up here just a week back...terrible....
