Coturnix and cold weather

Quote:
Wow these birds are tougher then I originally thought!

btw frozen eggs are good to eat (have had a few in the last few days!) but of course not good for hatching...

I still get eggs too and quite a few really but I light them since in the winter they are under tarp etc for protection from wind and if I did not light them they would be in the dark 23/7 (I have to move tarp to feed/water etc)

I did throw in straw and boxes and 1 single light bulb just in case during our cold snap. I have only 1 bird who was under the lamp a lot during that time... another red Tibetan. I wonder if maybe they are not as hardy or if both mine were just not as strong as normal.

They could have been getting a tan.

I put a heat lamp over the waterer on cold nights, and they sprawl out right in front of it and soak up the light. They also lay under it so now the eggs don't freeze.

Mine lay in a bowl under the heat lamp. I just take the bowl full of eggs back to the house and put another one in while I'm down there. It is a lot easier than carrying 35 eggs in your jacket handwarmer and then falling.

Just keep them out of a driving wind, and they will be fine down to 12deg. F.
3.5 mil. plastic is a God send!
Coturnix are far more cold hearty, than they are heat hearty!
