How many eggs a day do chickens lay?

It takes 26 hours for an egg to form from start to finish inside a chicken, so they won't lay more than one a day.

Happily owned by 7 fluffy butt girls: 1 BO, 3 BA, and 3 Cochins.  Also have 11 hermit crabs, 2 giant african millipedes, a ball python, and a wonderful irish wheaten terrier!  2 awesome boys who love them all!

Usually only one. Sometimes it will seem like they lay two but that is just how it is. You won't probably ever get 365 eggs a year from a laying hen. Everyone needs a break sometimes. smile

I have a wonderful wife, 2 kids,18 different types of birds some mixed some purebred golden duck wing Phoenix.

A "good layer" will hopefully lay 6 a week.  3 or 4 is much more common.  This chart shows how many the average chicken of each breed will lay a week:

Thanks!  That must mean that more than one of our chickens is now laying - I've only seen one- so exciting to be getting our first eggs!  Feels like easter!

That chart has been moved to a new site.  It's now at http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html.

Since this page is a top hit on Google for "how many eggs do chickens lay", I figured I'd better provide the updated link.
