Is this one likely to be a rogue egg that got into the clutch by mistake, do you think?  Is he a buff or partrige silkie (and what is the difference)?

I doubt it was a White Silkie x Light Sussex, because then where would the buff come from?  That cross would not produce sex-links.  Red or Buff Silkie x Light Sussex would make sex-links.  If the bird in question is six months old, s/he should start laying or crowing very soon.

That white chick looks very different from the others.  Bigger, light colored legs, camera shy (just kidding, LOL tongue), and his down looks different too.  I bet there was some mix up with the eggs, that's my best guess. smile

This is what the white chick grew up to look like - and he was definitely a boy!  The "new boy" looks nothing like this smile

And I've just been advised that Dad probably was a gold silkie, so the goldtops would be gold silkie/light sussex cross which makes sense with what everyone's said.  Many thanks for all the posts, going to put this one down to a rogue egg smile

BTW would anyone in the UK like him?  Can probably arrange delivery most places . . .  We have a restrictive convenant on our property and can't keep cockerals sad

What exactly was the cross?  There are lots of misinformed people on the subject of making sex-links...

I'm not an expert but I was told both parents have to have the silkie gene for the chicks to have silkie feathers. So, I would guess a mix up in the eggs too.

Umm, I'm pretty sure that white one is a hen.

I have just bought three goldtops that are gold in colour does this mean they are female as if they were male they would be white. The supplier wasn't sure but charged me accordingly.

HI I have silkies and gold tops. To Produce a gold top you would need a white silkie roo (as they carry the gold gene) over a light Sussex. Your chick looks like a roo he is lovely, but his feathers are very silkie like. Gold tops have normal looking feathers with the flufier type around the underneath of the bird. He isnt a true Silkie either though because of his comb which would be a walnut shape if he was all Silke. I would guess he has silkie and Sussex in him but maybe the hen was the Silkie. Either way he is a gorgeous boy hope he isnt too noisy and you can keep him
