hawks and would a rooster defend hens

My roo keeps a close eye on the sky...he even has me trained to look up when he makes his 'danger from the sky' call. The girls listen to him, too! They will freeze at first to see where the danger is, then run to the nearest cover. Mine free range for most of the day, we are in the woods where there are lots of hawks and owls and, so far... (knocking on wood) haven't lost one to a hawk yet...or anything else either. I know it is just a matter of time, but so far Rudy Roo has done a great job of keeping everyone informed about danger.
I saw a red tail hawk yesterday about 2:00 PM. My rooster was giving his very distinctive call of warning, and the hens all ran for cover. I then looked up to see it fly directly overhead pretty low, and then away to the east. Beautiful bird. Lost a hen to one before getting my rooster.

I'm worried because I have two juveniles (eight weeks old yesterday) free ranging in the pasture with the adults, but the adults won't let them near them. But they are very instinctively cautious on their own, staying near the fence line and under brush most of the time.

At dusk, when I come out to secure the henhouse (in which all the adults have already put themselves to roost), the two juveniles come running over to me peeping for me to pick them up and put them to roost. They have their own secured enclosure up by one of the hen house windows.

I have 2 geese in with my chickens. hawks are around and cannot say I have seen loss or signs of loss. A older gentleman told me of this and also says they help keep mice out of feed areas, clames geese are equal to dogs with sheep or cattle . Have seen geese holer and take off running and most chicken go fo cover or smaller lot. So far looking good and will replace geese when needed. My lot is 92x36 no top I do have smaller lot I use at night attached to cop that is coverd. Just passing info hope this helps. 1 old hen
