Randy, The young Wheaten are really looking good. Males look real good

Don,

We are seldom as great in the eye of others as we are in our own mind.. Look at the photo section at the album and see pictures of my setup. Plan on adding a few pictures shortly.

Hi Randy,

Looks like you eliminated the white tail puffs.

Will they do well with a 1:7 ratio of cocks to hens? With my Jersey Giants, I have to keep it closer to 1:4 to make sure that all the hens are paid equal attention. Maybe it has to do with their size.

I'm wondering because I'm hatching out some late season chicks (2 out this morning and one more had a sizable pip so far) and I'd like to keep a relatively small flock but want to be sure I have enough "spares" that I don't find myself in the same predicament I'm in now- no males after the double whammy of raccoons and a heat wave!

Nice crop of young birds Randy!! I see quite a few nice boys in there, if I was closer, I might come relieve you of one or two. wink.png

We finally got some good rain yesterday, with more coming today. Right now it's sunny and breezy, temps around 85*, so the chicks are outside playing in the big run. Hopefully if the weather stays cooler, they can finally get out of my house! Wheatie-Pie is going to be a plus sized gal, what a chunker!

The Marans I have worked with will be fine with 1-7 ratio. The young male can cover more female and be fertile. I have run as many as 25 female on the yard with one male and had great hatch rate. If you run more than One male with a group of females most likely the fertility will go down due to the males interfering with each other. I never run two males in a breeder pen.
