My husband is being transferred out of state- we're from NY and moving to Johnson city tn. We've never been there yet and are wondering what its like?

We'll be living in the country, we have two very young children.

My biggest concern is being a "yankie". my parents moved to southern MO and were litterally threatened by the insane confederates down there until they changed their license plates... my dad also was refused service a few times when it was said he was from NY... Its not like that in TN is it?

Are the people friendly?

What about snakes and spiders? Am I unreasonable worrying about spiders?

PS I missed you guys- been gone a few months, how is chicken world?

WOW, when did they move to missouri and in what part. Yikes. I am from Kentucky but have been around these surrounding states a good bit when I worked. I have never noticed an issue. I lived in Massachusets for a while. My husband is from there and moved here. We have never had an issue. Actually as a southerner I got more harassment in Ma then my husband ever got from here. I do so love the jokes about wearing shoes.

Tennessee is a wonderful place to live. Most southern states are. Its cheaper to live down here. You will find the people friendlier. Don't freak when people look you in the eye. They are not trying to intimidate you, I promise. That is one of the things I found so funny when the in laws visited. They absolutely freaked over everyone looking them straight in the eyes. Do plan on driving farther to do things. My new england relatives are just amazed that we consider driving 2 hours to an orchard a little day trip. I think if you give it a chance you will find people very friendly. Of course you could run into nutty people, but you can run into them anywhere.

I know my father in law is a bit bigoted about southern states and bemoans the lack of culture in the place his son moved to but honestly that part is not bad either. Its funny up North we could not afford to do so many things simply because of the cost of living. My DH moved here for the same amount of pay he got up here but our cost of living was cut in half. We are now able to do so many things we could not afford to do before. Tennessee is actually one of our favorite places to visit and we try to make weekend trips at least twice a year. Lots of fun. I hope you enjoy your new home and settle in well.

they moved out there five years ago- to the southern park, just north of arkansas. It wasnt the people in the cities- it was the country folk.

We're actually from upstate NY- it takes me 40 minutes just to get to the grocery- so actually moving to the tricity area should be easier. no kidding about the cost of living! We cant afford to live in this stupid bankrupt state- as if everything else was expensive enough the taxes are like a mortgage on their own. Its insufferable.

Iam hoping it'll be nice down there. And you're right- people in the North East NEVER look at eachother, unless its to give the finger.... LOL

Been to Johnson City a few times.

Mostly the fellers just laze around in bib overalls drinking 'shine
and talking about how them Yankess done ruint their life.

My advice to you is to stop at the state line and take the license
plates off'en your car. You'll be safe then. Better yet if you show up
in and old pickup with great big tires. Bigger the better. Some primer
paint spots on yer truck helps too.

And don't worry about the spiders and snakes. Mostly, the bears seem
to eat all the most poisonest snakes. But that kinda gives the bears a
bad attutide for a spell. So, best watch out for the bears.

Spiders in them parts aren't really to bad...they're pretty big, so you
can generally see one coming at you.

With it being winter and all now, you'll be pleased to hear that the people
in Johnson City finally got indoor plumbing. Well, most of them anyways.
Why, they's got tv and ever'thing in them parts now.

By the way....Can someone in your family play the banjo? That's a must...

Actually, Johnson City is a pretty nice place. Blacktop roads, even. Downright
nice place. Nascar county. Farming. Nicest people you ever met.

Beautiful area. And really...nice people. I hear they've finally passed a law
about harassing the Yankees.

Spook

Spookwriter, you mock me. And I laugh at your mockery.

(I am also sticking my yankee tongue out at you)

I had never EVER seen grownbutt people in overalls until my parents moved to MO... Serious? Overalls on an adult man? Its just pain sinful.

However, I think I should like to develop a nice southern draw, even if its without donning bibs and bub.

Beautiful place....just not New York City.

In the south, clean overalls is considered as "well-dressed".
New overalls...now that's just dang-near Sunday clothes.

For the most part, them hillbilly's even wear shoes. At least, them
thats got 'em, wear 'em. Sometimes in the poorer family, the kids
might have to take turns wearing the shoes, but dey still got 'em.

And don't worry 'bout dem hillbilly spiders...dey ain't got no teeth.

You might need to lose that New York-ness, and practise a little patience. Theres a lot of people here from Tennesse; they might not be online the exact time that you are, and you may need to wait more than 15 minutes for some answers. But Im sure you will get some.

Not sure where Johnson City, TN is. I'm near Knoxville. Moved there from Los Angeles 3 years ago. I have no issues with anyone

However, make sure you are overly tolerant of the "bible belt" type things, as there are a million of them. My neighbors are all very nice and will do anything to help me out. Be friendly, be patient, don't talk bad about their churches or their mommas or their horses! LOL.
