I know that with Ameraucana chicks, it is difficult to figure out whether they are male or female when they are little.

How old are they before you have a fairly good idea who is of what gender?

What are the characteristics that would tell you earliest, which are male and which are female?

honestly, I have a hard time until they are about 10-14 weeks old some MAY be obvious but not all the time. The early redness In pea comb is a sign but keep watching for the hackle feathers for being elongated and pointy ended. Tail ( saddle) feathers too-Pointy tipped feathers curving downward-females with have fatter feathers that are nicely rounded on ends... got photos??

I had some I couldn't tell until they are almost 14 weeks old!

Then the disapointing pointy hackle feathers started coming in along with the sadle feathers.

I have 3 that are supposed to be hens (sexed), but from day 1 of bringing them home we've referred to one of them as The Rooster. So far, besides its slightly larger size, the only difference between it and the others is attitude. It's either a roo or the seriously sassiest hen I've ever come across, and I've known a few.

Terrible pics but here's a thumbnail of the sassy suspect, they're all a few days shy of 10 weeks old:

And here's a pic of one of the other non-sassy, non-suspect hens:
pic 2

The third hen is camera shy, unlike my sweet rock hens who kept hogging the lens.

You sure can't tell in it in the pics but the sassy one is actually more beautifully marked than the others, and the comb is a bit pinkish, unlike the others, but nothing drasticly different. In the past, mine were always mild mannered and peaceful, but she jumps on their backs or just crowd surfs right over them if they're in her path, and basically runs roughshod over them whenever the mood strikes. The feedstore said they'd exchange her if she turns out a roo, but she's actually my favorite so that's not gonna happen. Unless there's something obvious you can see right now, guess I'll have to wait and see. Can you tell if pic 1 is a hen for sure?

beautiful-but dont take this the wrong way-this is a huge mistake people make-those are not ameracaunas--there EE's ( Easter eggers) maybe at one time one of their parents were Ameracaunas-but not both-alot of feed stores and hatcheries sell them as Ameracaunas but they are not:-( Im sorry but beautiful birdies-I cannot tell from those photos what sex they are -a big side shot of the whole entire body head to toe would do it probably:)

I think your sassy girl is a girl. That color is a girl color on easter eggers, and her legs are nice and thin. Enjoy your colored eggs!
