Button Quail PELTS....

Quote:
Question for you RE fly tying. I know NOTHING about it, haven't fished since I was like 11/12. But, my sister and her husband have made a living as running a professional fly fishing guide service in N. Michigan since 1993, so the topic has some interest to me in a roundabout way. I could just ask her, but you're here, so I'll ask you:

Can't you use practically ANY kind of fur or feather to tie a fly? Or, is there a risk using something "different" (like the button quail feathers) that the fish just won't "rise to the lure" as they say, and reject it.

Just wondering if I should be saving button quail feathers for my sister. She already wants my pretty turkey feathers!

YES ANY FUR/ FEATHERS CAN BE USED, EVEN MANY SYNTHETIC MATERIALS ARE USED, BUT THE FLIES TIED ARE NATURAL IMITATIONS OF EXISTING REAL SPECES.. TROUT/ SALMON ARE QUITE PICKY AND APEX PREDATORS IN THEIR HOME WATERS... THEY WILL NOT USUALLY STRIKE SOMETHING THAT DOESNT LOOK LIKE NORMAL PREY. DRY FLIES ARE DESIGNED TO FLOAT ON TOP OF THE WATER AND LOOK LIKE ADULT BUGS OF 1 SPECES OR ANOTHER, NYMPH FLIES ARE DESIGNED TO RIDE IN THE WATER COLUMN (BELOW THE SURFACE AND ARE MADE TO IMITATE "NYMPHS" OR LARVE OF AQUATIC FLY SPECES. THE MATERIALS USED AND DESIGN TIED DICTATE DRY FLOATING OR WET SINKING FLIES. FLY FISHERS "MATCH THE HATCH" IN ORDER TO BE GOOD AT IT YOU NEED AT LEAST A LITTLE ENTOMOLOGY BACKGROUND IN THAT WHEN YOU GO FISHING YOU LOOK AROUND THE AREA AND SEE WHATS FLYING AROUND IN THE AIR OR SKIMMING THE TOP OF THE WATER- YOU THEN PICK A SUITABLE IMITATION FROM YOUR FLY BOX AND START FISHING

MOST "FLY RECIPES" ARE PATTERNS THAT IMITATE REAL LIFE AQUATIC AND TERRESTRIAL SPECES FOUND IN YOUR QUARRY'S ENVIRONMENT. THE PATERN FISHED CAN ACTUALLY CHANGE MANY TIMES IN ANY GIVEN DAY AS DIFFERENT FLIES ARE AVAILABLE TO THE FISH AT DIFFERENT TIMES DURING THE DAY. SOME STONE FLIES HATCH AT 1ST LIGHT, OTHERS MIDDAY, YET OTHERS LATE AFTERNOON/ EARLY EVENING. NO AQUATIC FLIES HATCHING WHILE YOU'RE FISHING? THEN YOU FISH NYMPH FLIES OR GO TO TERRESTRIAL FLY IMITATIONS-- BUMBLE AND HONEY BEES, CRICKETS, DEER FLIES, ETC.. SALT WATER FLY FISHING CAN VARY FROM THIS, BUT FRESHWATER USUALLY ADHERE'S PRETTY CLOSELY. AS FAR AS SAVING FEATHERS FOR SIS... EMAIL HER AND ASK IF SHE CAN USE THEM.

I NEVER SAID HOW OR WHY THEY KILLED THE LIL PIGMIES. YOU POSTED ABOUT PELTS, I SIMPLY STATED SOME USES FOR THEM. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW OR WHY ANYONE WOULD KILL BUTTONS. I AM WITH YOU I DONT BELIEVE IN USELESS KILLING, BUT IT COULD POSSIBLE BE THAT THEY DIED FROM NATURAL CAUSES AS WELL? MANY BIRD AUCTION SITES THERE CAN BE FOUND AUCTIONS FOR WHOLE CARCASSES FOR TAXIDERMY USE... THESE ARE OFTEN NATURAL DEATHS. COULD BE A SIMILAR SORT OF THING HERE?

I PINION MY BIRDS AND SELL THE DRIED WINGTIPS ON EBAY FOR DOG TRAINING AIDS... I AM OF THE MIND FRAME THAT LITTLE OR NOTHING SHOULD GO TO WASTE. IT MAY BE THIS EBAY INDIVIDUAL IS AS WELL? ITS HARD TO SAY FOR SURE. BUT AS A FREE SOCIETY THERE ARE ALWAYS THINGS THAT PLEASURE AND ANNOY EVERY ONE OF US. ULTIMATELY IF THEY RAISE THEM SIMPLY FOR THE PURPOSE OF MAKING PELTS UN-NECESSARILY THATS THEIR BUSINESS. THEY ARE THE ONES FOOTING THE BILLS AND DOING THE WORK (PERSONALLY I DONT BELIEVE IN IT, BUT IT IS A FREE COUNTRY

)

I KEEP FEATHER FROM MY BIRDS FOR TYING AS WELL AS PURCHASE FROM OTHER SOURCES AND SELL SURPLUS FEATHERS... I HAVE NO IDEA WHY ANYONE WOULD WANT BUTTON QUAIL FEATHERS AS I PERSONALLY KNOW OF NO FLY PATTERNS THAT CALL FOR THEIR USE, BUT MAYBE HE HAS A SECRET PATTERN THAT ABSOLUTELY DRIVES TROUT BONKERS? (NEED TO ASK HIM

) HECK I'VE EVEN GONE SO FAR AS "BORROWING" A COUPLE OF HACKLE FEATHERS FROM A ROOSTER ON OCCAISION IF I HAD A TRIP COMING UP AND RAN OUT OF FEATHERS FOR TYING BEFORE THE TRIP... THE ROOST WASNT HARMED BUT I DONT THINK HE APPRECIATED THE NEW DO...

I have owned poultry all my life, and love all birds for that matter, but this hobby brings many people to the table. Some people are in it for the beauty of the birds, others want a pet, some want meat, and others want to sell that meat or other product resulting from the death of the bird (like hackles, skins, feathers, feet etc.). I am here for several of the above reasons, but mainly the hobby has me because it is a source of food that I can grow myself. If I could not eat my birds I would not see the point in doing it. That is just me. I do not judge those of you who only keep chickens and other poultry as pets, and I expect that you do not see me as a demented and cruel person for eating my birds and selling their byproducts to offset my costs. Even if you do not agree with my philosophy, look at it this way, if someone has taken the time to learn how to properly skin and preserve a bird pelt, do you really think they are wasting the meat?

Anyway, I am moving on now, no disrespect meant to anyone.

I don't care what people raise their birds for as long as they are well cared for -- but seriously....what the heck would someone want with that tiny pelt? I am curious. I guess you could make cat toys from them or tiny Barbie coats.

OMG... " or tiny Barbie coats"

I READ THIS AND IMMEDIATELY THOUGHT KEN..... FEATHER COAT, LOUD PANTS, FLAMBOYANT HAT, SOME ELTON JOHN LIKE SUNGLASSES AND NOW YOU HAVE A KID ROCK DOLL!

That makes me want to grab a ken and harvest my quails now! (j/k -- too much of a wuss and far too attached)

After that posting a couple days ago and thinking on what Sweetwater Clyde said, I thought about all those feathers I sweep up every day....they are always losing feathers everywhere someway or another. I sculpt a lot so I think I will start using those pretty little feathers. This has been an inspiration thread!
