Best Automatic Chicken Door Openers???

I have the Chicken Guard. It has been working fine so far in the last 4 months. I also added the flasher light with dual LED when the door closed. This allow me to see the door closed about 60 feet away and deter other predators away. It has been working fine. Both door and flasher are AA Nimh rechargeable battery operated. I expect the battery will .last several months. Base on my experience, I don't like battery stay longer than 4-6 months anyway because they will leak and cause problem.

Hope this help! There are few options, but I took the cheapest route without mini /micro switch.

This is a good thread. I've been hard at work planning to develop and sell a better door opener. The pain points seem to be:
  • Customer no-service
  • Low temperatures
  • Ice build-up
  • Price
  • Reliability
  • Ease of installation

What else?

I just installed a chickenguard today. I have it set on light sensor since I do t want to have to change the timer setting all the time. I'm looking forward to seeing how it does

So far, not so good. It was supposed to close when to light sensor read 80. It was quite dark and the door was still open and I checked the reading and it said 60.... I'll have to do some tinkering tomorrow

I installed the Pullet-Shut Automatic Chicken Door (www.chickendoors.com) last week and I'm thrilled with it. I got the full kit including the photo cell, solar charger and battery option since I don't have electric run to the coop and didn't want to adjust a timer several times a year. Its a little pricey but worth it since I'm a late riser and sometimes not home before dark.I tried but really couldn't build one as good as this system for much less considering all the parts and time.

It was a very quick and easy installation. I cut an opening for the door, drilled four holes and installed with provided screws, routed the wiring, put the battery in a box and mounted the solar panel and it was ready to go. I spent about 2 1/2 hours total. I think I will eventually build a "porch roof" over the door to prevent possible snow and ice buildup since that's really the only complaint I've seen with this door. I wanted to anyway to keep heavy rains out of the entrance. The only thing I had to buy was some wire clips for about $3 to hold the wires to the outside of the coop as I routed them around.

Overall, I'd rate this system a "10". Easy to install, easy to program, appears to be very sturdy and well built. Time will tell about reliability and durability but I don't think there should be any real issues. Happy chickens = happy owner!

I see from your photo that the door opens to the outside. Is it possible for it to open to the inside?
Also, I see his post is from February, are you still liking it? Any complaints?

You could mount the door inside the coop so it would open that way. The door has operated flawlessly since installed. The solar panel is very adequate to keep the battery charged. I'm actually considering installing a door on our 2nd coop and tapping the power from the same battery. They don't draw very much. I also really like the photo sensor operation, it's not adjustable but they've got it set just right IMO. At first I thought it closed a little late but I've learned some chickens like to go to roost late so its perfect, and I don't have to worry about resetting a timer as the seasons change. Pros, everything. Cons, haven't found any.
