Hen-on-nest dishes

Nice collection, Robin! You might want to check the "completed" listings on eBay to see what the current going prices are for Nesting Hen Salts. Anything Cobalt seems to be popular lately, as is the Jadite Green and Chocolate Slag.

You're correct in referring to the 'swirled' as Slag. Some also refer to it as EOD (End of Day). Slag was always made at the end of the day - they would add whatever colors were leftover that day to the white milk glass.

The red paint you were trying to scrub off is most likely from the original "cold paint" - pieces were hand painted before they left the factory. If you have pieces with most or all the original cold paint still intact - these are more valuable. But you need to watch out for pieces that have been touched up more recently - 'touch-ups' will usually lower the value. You can find pieces now that people have actually touched up with red nail polish - a big no-no.

There is a catalog I get called Country Door that has some chicken stuff, mostly roosters that were outstanding!!!! Love that stuff. Found a chicken calender at Big Lots for $2 that is folk art, or Penn. Dutch chickens, so cute!!!!
