Why candle eggs?

I know what candling is for i'm just unsure why we do it. Is it also to simulate the times the mother hen gets off the nest? Does it hurt the other eggs to have unfertilized eggs in there with them? I do candle and will continue to but it just doesn't make that much sense to me and i feel it would be better for the others to just let them incubate nonstop at a steady temp. Am i wrong? Why? This may be a dumb question but i'm just trying to learn.

The biggest reason is so there will be NO SURPRISES.

A dead or unfertilized egg kept in a warm, humid box for twenty one days is asking for trouble. Candling gives you a way to find anything that might be about to blow.

The other reasons are so you can watch what's happening! My kids love candling eggs and watching the chick develop inside.
 
Right, but why is it necessary to check more than once or even at all? If you know the roo has been at the hens why check to see if the eggs are fertile and if you check between days 4-8 why check again at day 14 to lockdown? Thanks though.
 
candling is not necessary, it is generally used for those who want to make room the the incubator, curious on how many eggs are good, the little bit of cool down is good for the eggs, if your egg are dirty candling will pick out the eggs that can be turning bad. I do not candle my serama eggs till day 18, the others 10 days or later. I've done this often enough that the wait is not as hard as it used to be.

So basically its for peace of mind? Thats what i was thinking too but wasn't sure... No doubt it is fun and you feel great knowing there is something developing just wasn't sure if it was really that necessary. When you said anything about to blow...... the unfertilized eggs will literally blow up? I didn't know that.... Good info

I candle twice, if that. Day 10 and Day 18. Sometimes I forgo the first one. This time, I did get sucked into candling at day five, because I had stacked eggs in the 'bator and wanted to remove duds to put the stacked eggs in securely. Never stacked eggs before...
 
well if you have ever had an egg explode on ya, you would candle all the time its one of those smells that almost never goes away and it would make a skunk jealous (well maybe not that bad but it will make you think when you put off candleing) I candle almost all the up to the peep and I always know where the chick is going to peep and pretty close when it will peep here is a picturn on day 20 you can see the chick starting the peep
