Ducks on a pond...

After getting this feedback and thinking this through a bit more what I really want are garden ducks and geese. So, I think I will build a tractorable covered run for them by the garden where they will be safe from predators. If they each need their own, I could do two runs. Muscovies sound like a reasonable breed for this. I am thinking of something like Pilgrams or American Buffs for the geese.

As long as there's enough space, you can keep geese & ducks together. In fact, if they are raised together the geese will prove loyal protectors of your duck flock (though of course you can't rely on them exclusively for predator protection--even a large goose is no match for a hungry fox or playful domestic dog). If I had the space, I'd raise one or two geese with every group of ducks I raise. They are smart and loyal, and will warn the flock of danger, keeping a close eye all the time. Additionally, they tend to keep a level head in emergencies and make smart decisions--like the time one of my ducks got tangled in fishing line and the goose brought her up into the yard for me to assist. Then he went back to the pond and brought the rest of the ducks up so he could keep an eye on all of them.

cat: I like the cohabitation idea. How much space for three ducks and three geese.

What breeds of geese have you had? I'm really interested in getting one or two females next year and am researching the best breed to put with my six ducks.
