Freaking out. Is marek's contagious to parrots? - Page 2

Marek's is a herpes virus, your parrots have probably already been exposed (dander spreads it, and you have probably transferred dander between your chickens and parrots).

Generally only chickens get sick from it though so your parrots will probably be fine.

You can't get rid of Marek's, once it is in the flock the birds always carry it and pass it on to new birds.

Like all herpes viruses (cold sores, genital herpes etc..) stress often triggers an outbreak. When bringing in new birds realize they are at high risk, especially chicks/young birds that will be picked on by the flock.

I have it in my flock and just about every bird I have lost  to Marek's was new and stressed by the integration which lead to a fatal flair up, though injuries or other ailments could also trigger a Marek's episode.  Now when I want to add birds I buy day old chicks when I have a broody hen and let her raise them with the flock so the chicks don't get picked on as outsiders.

I don't watch them 24/7 but I haven't seen any sign they were picking on this chick. She had been with the flock since hatching. They are now establishing a new pecking order, I see and hear their squabbles, maybe that was enough for this pullet to get stressed. So sad...I could never be a farmer! She wanted to eat and struggled to control her body. We euthanized her this morning. I hope I don't lose anymore.
