I have an 8-month old Delaware who stood around looking puffy and sluggish this morning. I brought her in and did the usual if a quaranteen chicken (warm cage in house, favorite foods, vitamins, etc.). She had some interest in food, but seemed really sluggish.
I just came back home and found her vomiting brownish-yellow, slimey liquid. Her crop feels full and soft, her vent and poop are normal. I don't know when she has layed last. Her head is on the ground, with liquid oozing out of her beak.
I feed my free-range hens Layena layer feed, and a bit of scratch on cold days.
Please help!

My first guess is sour crop. Have you felt of her crop. Does the liquid coming from her mouth stink? I'm sure it doesn't smell good, but a spoiled smell is indicative of sour crop.

Thanks for the input, guys. I suspected sour crop (what came up when she vomited smelled really bad, and there was no iimpaction). I massaged her crop and got everything ready to flush her last night, but she had gone too long. Her comb and wattles turned purple, and she died in my arms. Wish I had found her earlier. We are very sad.

I realize that this is a very old post, but I haven't reached out to anyone in chicken community about a chicken of mine that died last week. I had her and 2 others for the past year...one day my husband told me to check on her because she had been hiding under the bushes for most of day and had moved to under a ledge of our shed instead of going to roost with the others. She has always been happy and healthy. I've never had a sick chicken before, so I put her in a dog crate to separate her. I fed her water with a syringe and later wonfered if I had given her too much at a time. I noticed that she had a bad sour smell coming from her mouth and some yellow fluid coming from it. She went from laying on her side with her legs stretched out to standing, so I thought she was getting better because of fluids. At one point I was holding her and fluid started running from her beak when her head was lower than her body. I tilted her further over, thinking I would help her get rid of something that she needed to expel. Fluid poured from her beak, then her neck feathers fluffed out, she flapped her wings a few times and she died in my arms. I was crushed. She and the 2 others have been pets. I keep wondering if she choked or drowned in the fluid that was coming up. I keep thinking that I had something to do with her dying. Any insight would be appreciated.

I suspect my chicken has sour crop she has been vomiting a yellowy brown liquid with an awful smell. She is very special to my little sister and i wondered if anyone from this community knows how to keep her alive, she looks very unwell and we have been giving her lots of water and keeping food to pellets. Can anyone let me know what to to do make her feel better??

don’t feed or water her until she has passed this, you can dilate apple cider vinager with water but don’t give her food. this is something she needs to pass on her own. apple cider vinegar has always worked wonders for me :) good luck and let me know how she does
