Thinking About Raising Some Pheasants AS PETS Whats It Like?

Adding on to this thread despite its oldness, If you still have the lady amherst birds I would recommend not keeping them with red goldens as hybridization will occur which is a huge taboo in the pheasant world. They are a whole new ball game compared to chickens and imprinting is generally not a good thing with these birds.

I get your perspective. However, it would be nice to have tame pheasants, yet you're correct that it is kind of taboo to cross golden pheasants with Amherst's pheasants. What do you mean (can you clarify)?

Imprinted birds can get aggressive towards people because they view people as pheasants and not humans. If you raise them in groups this doesn't happen as much since they have each other to "remind" each other they're pheasants. I got all my pheasants as juveniles and they tamed down very well despite being older. For me it's not so much because I am keeping them as pets as it is tame birds being easier to check for health issues and keeps them from panicking and breaking their necks if you need to get in the pen.

From my experience, I have raised gamebirds from chicks. They imprinted on me (not all of them), and they weren't aggressive towards me, nor other people. Your experiences may differ from mine, though.
