I just got allergy tested today; other than the nurse saying I am the most allergic person she has seen, I am also allergic to feathers! Did I mention that I have over 40 chickens, 12 in the incubator, and was going to place on order for 20 more? ha ha!! Other than being allergic to all grasses, trees, molds, and weeds, I am a Master Gardener, and just starting a garden co-op this spring...do you think I may have picked bad hobbies? Oh well, I'm getting started on allergy shots so I can keep up my lifestyle

I think if I were allergic to chickens I'd either suffer or take allergy medicine. Allergies wouldn't stop me either.

I, too, am allergic to trees and grasses, so what do I do for a hobby? Wildland Fire Fighter. I help do controlled burns in wildlife management areas - I consider the burns to be a little bit of a payback for my allergies. Haven't been tested for chickens; hope I'm okay around them 'cause I don't think they'd like the consequences!

Do a search on pigeon lung disease. There are individuals and instances where exposure to poultry dander can cause SERIOUS health problems. Invest in a cannister type mask to use when cleaning coops (Foy's pigeon supplies sells a beauty that I use) and do not raise chicks in the house. There is no reason you can't enjoy your hobby just be sensible about exposure to chicken dander. Edited to add: It's not about letting allergies "stop you as referred to by Sumatra503" they can be progressive, and this particular allergy can either kill of debilitate you if you are among the unlucky oversensitized.

I had it when I was younger from playing in the barn and coops. I now take precautions but to this day still have a hacking cough from the lung damage. I also have 3 coops and am brooding inside

I just could not put them in the brooder in the shop in this weather (8 inches of snow and still snowing) and I missed them too much. I hope the allergies meds work, but still take precautions.
 
uuuummmm we have 7 inches of snow here Moooom! So I had to bring more in this morning.

I have an air filter and a nebulizer, but sick chicks is not my thing. When I can put medical insurance on 50 chickens then we will talk.

When I was a kid my parent/grandparents didn't know better and I stayed in the barn with them. I do clean it every day and do my best to keep things tidy. But I just love hatching and babies they make my heart smile. I think in the winter we all need good feeling vibes to off set the depression of the awful weather and no sunshine. But I can't wait till spring I will take them outside soon as the weather allows.
