Hey Everyone!!! Acquired 7 EE hens Saturday.  I HAD to get more chickens - the coons are getting hungry!!!  My flock is slowly being rebuilt.  Will work on revamping the brooder coop this weekend.  I'm finally finished with the "main coop" and will try to remember to take some pics this week to upload.  The "brooder" coop is an old broiler barn (from raising them in h.s., which was only a few years ago ep) and everything is pretty worn, so I'll be ripping out the old and putting in new. Yea!!  Now my flock in the "main coop" consists of 11 laying hens and 2 light brahma roos.  My "brooder coop" has 11 marans (BC and splash), 10 RIR, 10 barred rock, 4 frizzle silkies, and 10 EEs.  I'll wait til this fall to order more Maran and Light Brahma chicks.  I'm pretty sure the breeds I'm going to zoom in on will be Marans & Light Brahmas (which I'm very interested in showing) and EEs (just for fun).  The silkies are for the kids smile

Hope Everyone has a great day!!

Hey Ya'll!! I posted finished coop pics in the "coop" section.  "Here's the finished "main" coop" is the title.  Let me know what you think.  I'm trying to figure out what's the best way to add new roosting space and to incorporate a temporary pen inside to put the new girls in once they are out of quarantine.

Hello All Texans,

I just found this thread.  Im in Breckenridge, between Ft Worth and Abilene.   Ive had chickens off and on most of my life.  Have a few left from my batch in July '08, and have 7 - 5 wk old now, and am thinking about getting more in Sept when it cools off.   Trying to decide what kind I want to get.   Was even thinking about some to butcher, but not sure I can 'go there' .

hi Pam
i can completely understand about the butcher chickens. my 2 girls did 4H for the first time last year and i have to say broiler chickens are a completely different animal from regular chickens. we butchered 46 of them and the is something i'm not looking forward to any time soon. very good to eat but still quite the experience.
