Ausie did you watch those you-tube vids on butchering chickens? There is some good ways to do it there.

Well if you are willing to drive to Austin (not sure when in SA you are so it might be easy or not :-)), there is one off I35 and 290 that will do it for $2.50 I think. They are called the Alexander Family Farm, alexanderfamilyfarm@yahoo.com, (512) 626-0224, if nothing else they might be able to point you to someone down your way.

I am new to the BYC community and have 2 RIRs, A rooster and hen. Adopted them so I don't know their age, but "Betty" lays an egg a day so far(only had them 3 weeks now), hoping that one day she may go broody and we will have chicks. She is still not letting me touch her, but eats out of my hand-so does the rooster "Zeus". Since we live in Rice, Texas..I have done lots of reading on feeding, how to keep them cool in this extreme heat and general care. Love this site and all the information that I have gotten from others........Karen in Texas

We have 1 Rhode Island Red Rooster-Zeus, 1 Rhode Island Red hen-Betty, 2 Border Collies-Brandi and Cooper, 1 cat and 2 kittens-Chloe, Tiger and Jessie, a Guinea Pig-Bella and a fantastic vegetable garden this year....we love to work in our yard and love all of our pets...

Her pullet was hatched with a deformed foot and she is walking on a clenched fist like foot.... I called the hatchery and informed them on the problem and all they will do is refund the $ a whole $3.50.... while my DD is ballin her eyes out I get to be the masked exicutioner! YAY!

Welcome!  Not sure if you read this, but in the summer I take those little drinking bottles and 2 liter coke bottles, add water and freeze.  Then just rotate them in and out of the coop.  I am on a rain water system so I can't do a mister, but this just reuses the same water over and over again.  they get a little dirty so I throw them in a plastic bag before I put them in the freezer.  the chickens love them and fight over who gets to stand on them, very funny to watch gig.gif Also, I bought some of that "shade screen" from Home Depot and just throw it over the coop in the summer and then take it down for the winter, it really does keep it 10-15 degrees cooler.

Thanks, RachaelS....I did know about freezing the water bottles as we did that when we had our rabbits and remember how they loved it!!! Didn't think about the screen, though...will give it a try. They like to scratch out holes in the ground under a huge Cypress tree in the yard and I started putting the frozen bottles under it as well as spraying the tree a bit to cool the underneath during the hottest part of the day. I am looking into a mister as well.....Thanks again!thumbsup.gif

Sarge, there's a possible fix for that.

Thanks slick! I used some toothpics and butterfly sutures ti rig a splint for her foot. She is missing a good portion of her toe I think that's why she's crippled....
