MSChickenmomma - Thank you for your post. I am so sorry you lost your hen. It did get me up off my duff to work on my broody. I put her in a rabbit hutch in the run with shade, food, water. Part of the cage is in the mister/fan "pathway" I have going in the run. She was pretty upset when I put her in it. The 2 other hens are hanging out my the cage keeping her company. It's cute.  I hope this works

Thank you everyone for the support. This will be my first summer with chickens, so I am now a nervous wreck. This north Texas heat gets to all animals.

My husband has put his foot down, about building a coop with ac. I have got to keep in mind that all livestock has been exsisting for thousands of years, in all types of weather. I can do my best to keep them comfortable and healthy, but things happen.

we are still fighting the heat here in Wylie. We are working very hard at keeping them cool. We actually put air conditioning into the main house and have two big high velocity fans. One is at the door to the barn and the other is at the mesh of the mobile coop and I hung a tarp on the 'sun side' of the mobile coop to help give them shade. It seems to be helping.

Even in all this heat... our hens have FINALLY started laying *whooot!*  we have now found 6 itty bitty little eggs. lol they are SO tiny and so cute but it will take a dozen of the to make a decent omelet.

Mom and gramma came down here to Texas from Washington state to see us. It has been 6 months since I saw mom and more than a year since I saw gramma. They were SO excited to see Texas. We also drove through Oklahoma and Arkansas to go to dig for diamonds at Crater of Diamonds park... it was alot of fun and we brought our dog who really hasn't gotten out of the house since January. Rex had a BALL... but in 103 degrees... it wasn't the greatest day for us because the heat took all our energy. I'm glad my upper 80s gramma is more like someone in their 50s because she was going up and down those hills in the heat like it was no problem at all.

Mom and gramma went back home on the 3rd and we already miss them a lot. Hubby and I are now just sitting around the house being bored... again. ;)  Wishing we knew someone around the area that we could go and hang out with. :( Its pretty lonely not knowing anyone here.

MSChickenmomma: I am so sorry for the loss of your precious hen :(

I am NOT a summer person! Jokes on me with us living in Texas lol! I am still plodding ahead on my coop build, going as fast as I can but it never seems to be fast enough!

I am so eager to get our chickens, but as usual I have gone overboard, so our coop is taking much longer than planned.  My oldest son's choice of a Frizzle isn't going to happen as we're taking so long that they're sold out. But thankfully the bantam Cochins look awesome to him, so a sub is easy to find. Apparently they have a variety of colours so he should have a pretty good selection to choose from as long as we get there without taking too much longer.

I am starting to feel like the "Little Engine That Could"... I think I can, I think I can, I think I can! th.gif

What kind of fans did you get? can you take a picture of your fans/AC in the coop?

The fans are a similar model to this one:

And here is the AC in the window ;)  Its so funny to see the chickens sitting in front of it like "ooooooh yeeessss!"  It was a cheap one from walmart. it was like $94.

Thanks for taking the picture. I wish I had AC for my girls for just a few hours (6pm to 10pm). I have 2 box fans going just outside the coop. They are not outside fans. They are plugged into one of those outlets that shuts off if there is a short. My chickens are not in danger of being electrocuted, but I wish there was such a thing as an outside fan. My mister clogged up today, so I'm going to go buy another one.
