Me too love.gif   I won't have lav's anytime soon. All mine are blue & splash.  Hatched my 1st black yesterday but not sure yet if it's a split or silkied.  I thought I had my start in the lav Ameraucana but turns out there is an issue in the line I got eggs from so I am waiting for Spring for eggs from another breeder.

I am sure someone is working towards that somewhere.  The silkied birds started out in splash and then to blue
& splash.  Mine are mostly blues, a few splash.  Splash is my fav so that's what I am working on getting to.

so i need to learn the ins and outs of crossing.... is it the same as dogs? the male needs to be smaller than the female or does it not matter?

i can start it with my buffs and EEs but id like to cross my blue/lav OE with the silkies but not sure if its possible?

I bred dogs (showed my dogs) for several years and never bred that way so not sure about that one.   As far as these Silked Ameraucana, they are standard size, not bantam.  They are not Silkie crosses, they are pure Ameraucana.   If you use Silkie's to cross with, you are probably going to get some Silkie features but I have never used Silkies for anything so not sure what all that would look like.

Yes, I'm familiar with the project CatKai is working on. It started, what? 2? years ago when someone had two Ameraucana's hatch that had "silkied" feathers rather than the normal kind. It's been established that this wasn't the result of a cross with silkies at all, but a spontaneous mutation that does pop up from time to time, though it's rare. Most have not had great luck with these birds but CatKai seems to have been doing pretty good! SO GLAD of that. I love them.

ETA: It's been established that they do breed true. And it's been worked out who needs which etc. for the next generation to be silkied when crossing with normal feathered birds. Though I don't remember the details.

Love those Orps!

I don't care why the chicken crossed the road, as long as mine don't!

When I get to the point of being able to collect at least a dozen in a week I will let you know.  I am most looking forward to my splash pullet to start laying.  She's really pretty!

Had to go back to that thread to check the date.  The 1st post was 10-20-08 and the 1st 2 birds were 18 weeks old.

Only problem I have had so far is hatching so many boys last year.   And having some red color bleed on the wings of a couple of splash boys and a blue boy.   The mystery just up and dying thing could still be on the way I know but I have had them over a year now and not lost one bird to known or unknown causes.  Chicks hatch with no help.  Working on egg color and getting more splash silkied is my plan right now.

These are the 1st 3 hatched from a split.
