Difficult time deciding on chickens

Hi all.

Ok, I am stubborn. I have begun the construction of a coop and a run for six hens. The breeds are supposed to be quiet. though I know they make noise. I am doing all I can to not upset neighbors by venting into another shed which will I believe will reduce the noise they make. I am also insulating the nest in hopes that their cry is minimized. Additionally I am constructing a 6.5 foot tall privacy fence on the only side of the run that faces the neighbors in hopes of reflecting the noise away from them.

My concern is somewhat typical of what I have read here in some posts. I live in the country in a residential area. I own 1.5 acres of land. My nearest neighbors house is over 100 feet away from the coop. All of my neighbors that I have talked to are fine with me starting a coop.

Covenants say no birds allowed. I have researched and do no believe the covenants were ever filed and for that matter I don't believe I ever signed any.

Most in this area have broken the covenants including things like the height of fences, the painting of foundations to match the color of the siding and the diameter of the trees they can plant. In other words I don't put a lot of credence in the covenants if they aren't being enforced in any way. Barking dogs are also supposedly against the covenants but there is no enforcement other than what the county dictates.

I am not under the jurisdiction of any city ordinance. I have reviewed the ordinances governed by the county I live in and fowl are allowed up to 12 per acre as long as they are 100 feet from a neighbor.

Like I said I am stubborn but hopefully not too stupid. If close neighbors are fine with chickens would you go ahead and do it? I would preemptively fight the county but they seem to be in agreement with me. I would be proactive and get signatures of all people in the neighborhood but I am concerned that I would send up a red flag that I don't need to.

If it matters, I only have one neighbor 100 feet from me. The rest are a lot further away. My back yard is open to timber and pasture which is listed as agriculture. My property is listed as rural residential. I only state this to give an idea of the setting.

GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will never regret it@ Just keep the coop clean so it won't smell and don't keep any roosters.

Are chickens noisy? They sound like music to me... Just some off key singers. I would rather many dozen off key singing chickens than one of those early rising, loud, obnoxious crows that wake me every now and again. I think you over estimate the noise they make. If they are busy scratching and eating they are quite noiseless... Roosters, they are in another category and are NOT neighborhood friendly.

Hey!! I roosters! They are so handsome, and add so much to a flock in personality. And I to hear them crow! But neighbor may not like it.

We were worried that our neighbors wouldn't like the chickens when we got them but they love them! Even the one that turned out to be a noisy rooster... We finally got rid of him because we didnt like the noise and everyone in the neighborhood was sad, they loved his crowing! Try it, I bet you will get the same response, especially if you occasionally share some of your eggs.
