What's the best gun for use on rats?

Because you live in Long Island the laws may be differant than the rest of the state for a rifle. I would get a crossman 760 BB gun. Since it is a pump-up(the more you pump it the more power) you can control the power so you are not blowing holes into your wall. It is also a bolt action so if you want you can put multible BBs in the barrel for a spread shot.BBs are cheap! Also do the trap and bait stuff also. You need to attack this problem on many fronts for best results. Be safe! Always look beyond your target so you know what is going to stop the projectile in case you miss your target.

Sorry I didn't write sooner to say thanks for all the very good advice. I think if we do a little of all the tactics discussed to try and rid ourselves of these most annoying creatures, maybe we can put a dent in their population around here. My biggest fear is that they make their way from the coop into our house. I know they are just animals but they bring with them so many unwanted troubles/diseases/pests, I for one can do without them. What good do they serve anyway????

i use a .22 pellet gun i have a rat problem to and it works fine, i'm in Canada though. i usally buy them at canadian tire or online. where i'm at i have to have a permit when i go in the store but i don't when i order it online. you could buy a pack of 500 for $11.99 on amazon.

I have tried everything from the green poison lock box to old fashioned traps, black snap traps, i catch one every week or so, I have put out plaster of paris mix, still no dead rats after eating it all. i put concrete around and in the tunnels under my coop and blocked access to the run. this morning one in a trap and tunnels everywhere, i want to surrender but know i cant. I even bring food in at night. going to sit and shoot and mix more plaster maybe even try a smoke bomb.

The 50/50 peanut butter plaster of paris mix will work. Don't expect to see dead rats, they will usually find cover before death.

You seem to have a large colony infestation.
I would continue to put out the paris mix until it stops disappearing!
Not sure why you stopped.

I can't take it anymore! We've tried poison, we've tried traps and they are still stronger than ever. They are becoming a major problem here and I see so many, I can literally just sit there and start shooting at them, at least it might control their numbers. I have holes in my coop from them knawing their way in as the hardware cloth around the bottom stopped them from having access.

I have zero experience with guns, but I am a capable adult who would use it safely and wisely. I'm thinking a high powered pellet gun would do the trick. Any thoughts?
This thread had been helpful!
Im a dead shot.... shooting the rats WILL yeild results for me... they're not eating baits and they're too smart for the snap traps.
On another thread I read some guy strapped bacon to a trap with wire!
Can't wait to try!
