Lavender Orpingtons

I know I am newby to the forum, but I have been doing my research on LBO.  A.  I think they are gorgeous!  B. I'd love to more about the genetics and breeding of the these birds.  For example, I know a lot breeders to what breed their hens to show quality Black BO roos.  What happens if I breed a lavender rooster to a lavender hen?  Can you do that or does it come out with three eyes and five ears?  C. I know this is not a standard breed that is recognized on its own by the APA but how long and when?  What do you think are the nuiances for getting it set as a standard breed?  D.  I'd love to hear from people who have some and want to now if there is anything that makes different, better/worse than your other hens and rooster.

I live in CA.  The land of sunshine, avocados and oranges, but there are not many breeders of these birds out here.  I am trying to pick a breed and settle down and get a flock to breed.  I think this LBO are unique and would like to solely breed them.  However, one of my friends whose daughter is a 4Her said, "those, those are the puggles of the chicken world!"  roll  Is that really true?  I don't want to get in over my head!  Any input would be great, also pictures are a plus!big_smile

Thanks everyone in advance for your input.

there is a whole lot about them here · Development of USA Lavender Orpington - Update PICs pg 8
Yes you can breed lavender to lavender many people breed back to black to increase type.  for example this is my lavender roo Munstead
http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/38899_100_1036.jpg
for ideal orpington type he needs a lower tail and a much wider body and I'm sure a lot of other things too.  So I am breeding him to some black orpingtons with correct type.  there will be lavender splits they will carry the lavender gene but be black.  when they are bred back together they will produce a percentage of lavender offspring with better type than their grandpa Munstead.

I have some lavender hens too overall they are great layers and easy going birds.

BTW they are just referred to as Lavender Orpingtons ( buff is just a color not a breed) smile

I'm  not sure of the EXACT specifications for any color to be accepted by the APA, but it requires a certain number of breeders and a certain number of birds shown over a period of time before they'll be considered for acceptance.  Perhaps somebody else can chime in with the right numbers.

Thanks for drawing my attention to the name of the post.  I was thinking about Buff Orpingtons and writing this post on Lavenders.  I changed the post name.  OH... I saw the other link to the Lavender Orp. thread.  A lot of info. there!
