Raising Catfish in a barrel!! 11-03-2011 UPDATE!!

Well been back from a couple of months Hiatus.

I was doing this to mimic what people did in the depression days. you know, very little money, hardly a drop of electricity, only using stuff around the house. Well it did work for some time. The problem was the city water was highly chlorinated. It would have worked with that problem fixed. I tried with little money, not going all out and spending dollars that I do not have on an aquatic system.

I do want to still try barrelponics. I see good hope in this with bigger containers, same pump, more pvc pipes, tilapia instead of catfish, and a hydroponics bed that will feed into the fish container and so on.

But my project MUST be under 100.00. That includes the fish.

The lesson with catfish in a barrel worked about 95% as eFishent as the one from the depression era. So I say it was a success.

On the extreme plus side, fish water is excellent for plants!!

Where are you planning to buy the fish? What size will they be when you get them?

As you may know Tilapia will breed in an fifty gallon aquarium and they do not have to be really large to breed so you could produce your own starter cultures when ever you need them.

You will want to find another water source. They back flush and over chlorinate public water systems either quarterly or every 6 months depending on the system, So, it wasn't over chlorination, it was public water system maintenance, just an FYI.

Full of great info! What if you cut the barrels in half and turned them on their sides and just made two tanks?

As for chlorine, how about this?

Never used it myself but seems to be the type of thing that'd fit in your budget!
Looks promising. One thing that these chlorinators don't discuss is dissipation. What happens to the chlorine? where does it go? it just cant neutralize it in the same water. There has to be dissipation.so some other chemical is making it expel out of the water.

Just a curious thought.
