Houdans

I have also read you can 'tie up' their do.  I imagine they'd look a bit like Pebbles.

Aoxa, Skittles is just to die for.  I am not an SOP judge but she really fits the bill as far as I can see.  Let her grow before you stress out over her mottling.  She should develop over the next two years.

My hopes for Houdans are just about dead.  The hatch I had hoped for out of AU looks like maybe four Favorelles.  One Houdan is a slim possibility.  Back to square one.  I think Elias hit it on the head when he said that the heatwave affected fertility.  Really really sucks for me though.  My son has luckily been distracted by school restarting and a new Orp rooster.  Once again HE gets what he wants that I DIDNT (he also got a turkey this year the little worm)

Thank you ashandvine. She is adorable and very colourful.

Not the brightest, but I can live with that!

How old is she?  Spike is going on 21 weeks and no signs of laying either.  My Araucan pullet (her hatch mate) started laying last week so I am getting adorable little blue eggs but I am waiting on white!!!!:barnie
She is 27 weeks old. She is getting ready I can tell by her cackling. She squats and could very well be laying in the woods. She has a thing for the woods.. She tries to roost on the trees at night. I have to go out and get her 5/7 nights a week.

I tried to follow her around the woods this weekend, but she would not have it lol.

I'm thinking about confining her until I can tell if she really is laying.

Her pelvis has really spaced out - and there is plenty of room for an egg to pass now, so that's a bonus. I think it is anytime now!

Oh that is great!!! I needed something to laugh about today. I lost my really nice (and only) Polish cockerel. I was going to breed for chocolates and he was just starting to crow.... then he got eaten. I totally understand how hard it is to wait. I just keep getting bad news regarding my plans for birds here so you'll be all set aoxa. I am hogging all the bad energy so put her in a nice suite and she'll lay double yolkers or something :)

I'm sorry to hear that :( It sucks losing them. You are not having luck with predators at all are you? Need yourself a guard dog.

There's some lemon juice for ya! I have a GSD but if she's inside she can't hear the hawks swooping. I don't dare leave her out. The road and all. She is also one of those shadow dogs... always at my feet and if I leave her out she gets rather upset. She alerted me to the fox when she heard the chickens go off. The hawk was silent. Netting is my friend.

A hawk got one of your full grown chickens! Wow that is a big hawk!!!! We have one that lives near us, but she can only get small ones, which we learned the hard way. I am sorry you have had bad chicken news all around for the past few weeks.

Can she not sleep in the barn at night? Not sure what your setup is. Clem has never been inside - save a few times when we didn't have her kennel yet, and it was pouring out. She bounced off the walls and broke a few things. They are clumsy at 5 months old My Corgi mix Koda just chased off his second racoon in two nights! :woot I love this little dog. He is getting a treat tonight!

Though the racoon was almost as big as him, Koda scared the crap out of it. The racoon just wanted to eat through the compost pile. :p Our barn is predator proof. Unless a racoon can open a regular people door and walk in. They can't do that can they?

We baby sat some donkys for a while which kept the coyotees away. Came home a few times to see a huge racoon crossing our yard at night and about a week ago spotted him again as we came home. My husband ran in and got the rifle and tracked him down in the dark and mr. coon will no longer be a threat. We are considering LLamas as they are also supposed to be good guard animals. We have a dog but she is 16, deaf, half blind and her hips are giving out so she is no longer much help in the guard dog job.

Came home for lunch yesterday and Spike was on the outside of the pen, paceing and trying to get back in. Evedently she spooked, flew high and right over the fence. I keep a water source outside just for this reason and when we let them free range (under supervision).

They fly high when spooked, huh? Gigi is crazy like that lol.

I gave him a bath last night. He kept putting his head in the water. Really stupid boy :gig

Okay, so I've decided to keep my guy, but he's gonna need some girlfriends. Does anyone plan to sell hatching eggs after the 24th? I have a batch of Cream Legbar in the bator due that day but can try some Houdans after that. Since I'm in VA, they need to come from a NPIP/AI clean flock.
