trouble with snakes eating eggs

I have 17 chickens and would hate to loose one of them. But no matter what dont kill the snakes to keep them out of your way!! snakes have to eat too!! chickens are tough. My chickens have eaten big snakes many times, so I would not worry about that. As for the problem in general I believe that there are snake traps so that you can trap the snakes and relocate them. And rember, snakes are living things too that need food and have families.

I just found one in my garage this morning. Since I have mice and voles that come in to eat the chicken and horse feed I store in there, he (or she) is quite welcome there. But if I find her (or him) around the chicken coop I'll catch and relocate him/her miles from home. I am not so nice to rattlers, though. A few weeks ago I found one between house and chicken pen and I sent that one to snake heaven. I will leave them (and moccasins and copperheads) alone when I find them in the boonies, but I don't want them around the house. When we go out after dark to feed the horse and close the chicken house door it would be too easy to step inadvertently on them and get bitten. Not all rattlers warn you. Some have lost their rattles or haven't grown them yet. No venomous snakes allowed around the house!
