Welcome! No adult roos right now, but in a couple months I may know, silkies are so hard to tell sex on, right now they look alike and move as one unit, impossible to tell.

yes..Panther Creek. What is your opinion? Good, Bad? Just depends on who wants to come, we have a lot of folks close to Knoxville and could try to get a bit closer. I was trying to consider the ones from up near JC as well.

I'll have some cockerel chicks at the Newport show from my last test hatch. They will be 3 months old by that time. It was a Delaware Roo over one of the following: NHR, GLW, or Del. Any of those combinations should make for a fairly gentle roo. They will be really cheap just to get rid of.

Well, we are pretty open, if I got a young boy chicken now could be hatch eggs before the end of summer?

These are the dates ive already got something chicken related on:

April 14-knox

April 28- Carolina Chickenstock

May 5-newport

May 26-27- lucasville ohio

Nothing else is set yet as far as shows. My suggestion if you are going with panther creek is get a pavilion reserved early those tend to book pretty fast as i remeber. Other than that its awesome, tennis court, volley ball, soccer, camping, and its right beside the lake. One of the few good pet friendly parks around here too.

Oh yay, let me know a date asap so I can request it off at work before anyone else does.
I love to experi... I mean cook and am always looking for victi... I mean people to cook for. Lol
We should have a bunch of silkies hatching on the 9th so I can bring some chicks too.

IMG_0318.JPGIMAG0010.JPG I had a Buff Orphangton go broody so I stuffed 15 eggs under her from FEB 21st-24th. And Now I'm collecting them to set in an incubator. I started collecting Feb 25th and will stop MAR 3rd. I found a local guy who hatches for .50 a chick. The great thing is he has a web cam and post it. So if you want to see hatching chicks he hatches every week-end. http://cmfarm.us/cam_2.html Right now looks like he has Black copper marans. Also his pug has puppies soo cute. My eggs are green/blue ones from Ameraucana's and EE's, Black copper Maran, giant silver lace cochin and the one BO. I think she has 2 of hers under her. I will be setting at least 36 on the 3rd of march. All have a splash maran roo over them. The end result will be blue feathers and chocolate and olive eggers. And some fluffy mutts from the cochin/maran mix and BO/maran mix LOL . This is Buffy My BO you can't tell she has 15 large/exlarge eggs under her. I moved her to the chicken tractor so the others will leave her alone. I been using the tractor as a half way house for chick. I can clamp a heat lamp in the top if needed. This is the first time it's been used by a broody hen.

Usually (it varies from breed and particular rooster) he will start covering about 5 months old. You would wait till he is a good 6 months old though so he has the hang of it and is covering the hens well. On mine you are looking at about the 1st of August before he will start covering consistently. That puts you at the end of August for a hatch. I just watch my eggs for fertility and when I see 90% are fertile, then I'll start the incubator.

 

If you come to the picnic I can just bring you a few fertile eggs along with a young cockerel so you can start the incubator sooner if you are ready to try it now.
