We are trying to hatch out some geese for the first time and I'm really not sure what to do. I would really appreciate it if someone would help me out and answer my questions:

How long can I store goose eggs before trying to incubate them?
What temperature should I keep them at until I start?
How often should I turn them?
Anything else that I would need to know?

Thanks, Kenny

I'm just hatching my first batch so can't help too much. I have learned they don't keep very long before hatching, most people don't recommend more than four days. Keep them cool and turn three times a day.

I have a question too. Everything says 28 to 30 days so when do I stop turning. Mine are white Chinese so I don't know if different breeds take more or less time.

I know goose eggs need more humidity and need to cool for 15 minutes a day. People mist them but some say not to because of the risk of them getting infected.

Hope someone who has done it before chimes in.

Good luck with your hatch.

Thanks for your input.

If the breed does make a difference, ours are toulouse (sp?).

Good luck to you too.

I wa hoping for info too. I've always let mine set their own, but this year I have a good many eggs and no one is setting yet (except at night??? And they take turns on a single nest??? So I REALLY have questions, LOL.

Still, I found this article the other day that appears very informative. I can't comment on it, but they do claim very good hatch rates under certain conditions. Maybe others can comment, or take what you can use from it.

Incubating goose eggs

I am also incubating goose eggs for the first time. I have 5 Sebastopol eggs in my Brinsea.
So I am wondering.....when should I start to see development?
With chickens & ducks I can see veining in 3-5 days. And good development by 7-10 days. Depending on the color of the egg.
Also I have the eggs laying on their sides, I hope this is ok.

My hatch is going to be real staggered. I'm afraid to let them set out of the incubator more than a couple of days. I have two females but one is only a few months old and her eggs are small and don't seem to be fertile. The first two were set Feb. 8 and have really good movement. I'm going to move them to a hatcher when I stop turning. Right now they're on their sides in a small Brinsea with a lot of water and a sponge. I have trouble keeping the humidity up in the Brinsea and that's the main reason I want to move them to a styrofoam incubator where I can put in more water. Hope it works.

I saw the veins at about a week. They seem to take longer than chicken eggs.

Shiloh acres - Thanks for the link, it looks like a good one.

I thought maybe someone who's hatched a lot of geese would help. I know I've read stuff on here before but can't find it now.

Yeah I could also see veins after a week but they say to give them at least 10 days before you toss them... I've also heard laying on their side is the best way... I've heard of people dry hatching them but I would be to scared to do that... But to much humidity could be just as bad... I keep mine at 45-50% hum and around 99.5 deg.... give or take a degree is supose to be ok and they say humidty plus or minus 5 is ok with 50 being pefect... Then 75% for lock down... I have a question for the oldies: Is dunking them in water just as good as spritzing them???

If you have broodie chickens avaible they are the best for hatching. All geese should hatch on 28 days. When I was 16 ,about 50 years ago, I hatched 36 emdens under white leghorn broodies. My dad had a breeder flock of 800 hens and we would get broodies. The last 4 days we would dip the eggs in warm water. They hatched very good. Some of the hens were used for 2 hatches. They would set that long. Very important to have good nest and no lice.

Only the last 4 days. I am not sure if it is nessasary because here at the hatchery that I work we hatch ducks and geese in the same setters as chickens and it works good.
