Mottled Silkies?...Calling out for Silkie Experts.

Right here you said my choice of breeding will never result in a Sizzle. I think we r getting nowhere. I crossed my frizzle Cochin with a silkie and that is how you get Sizzles, no matter whether they r smooth feathered or frizzled. From here I will continue breeding to quality birds to improve my future Sizzles.

The reason to keep silkies in the cross for the first few generations is to get back to type after the cross to a cochin. The second generation is where you need to be most selective on which birds to continue using as that is where recessive genes start pairing up, and you can lose skin colour, crest, polydactyly, etc. Getting sizzles that are further into development would also be helpful in moving forward.

@Sonoran Silkies Thank you! That whole conversation threw me at first. It is so hard to get accurate info about breeding Sizzles. I thought I had started to figure some things out, and this made me question everything. That's ok I did more research and found some great articles. Do u have a website? It's also hard to find reputable breeders or people with knowledge about Sizzles. Would love to get my hands on any. Thanks again.

The link you posted earlier is Sherri Minkner's website; she is the foremost sizzle breeder out there IMO. But you are right, there is a lot of misinformation, and a large part of that is that sizzles are a project, not a recognized breed or variety. But there are people who are working on them seriously, and have been for years. There is a facebook page where project direction is often discussed. APA made changes in what is required to recognize a new breed, and that will make it extremely difficult to have sizzles recognized as a breed. And then there is a lot of not quite agreement on recognition as a silkie variety. I've played around with them for years, and kept somewhat abreast of the direction the breeders who are serious about sizzles are aiming, but I wouldn't say that I am a serious sizzle breeder.

Yes, she has been an amazing wealth of information about them, and I sincerely recommend anyone who is serious about them talking to her and looking at her website. She has answered so many questions for me via email. I just got thrown off when junebugga kept telling me that my smooth feathered sizzle wasn't a sizzle. Kind of panicked when she made the comment that mine was smooth and not silkie feathers so it couldn't be a sizzle. That's when I went back to Sheri's site ( and our previous emails about my birds) and doubled checked. Sure enough I am headed in the right direction. Anyway, I learned my lesson. Was just asking about color and ended up in a debate over whether my bird is a sizzle or not. From now on I'm just asking Sheri!:)

I know this is a really old post but I couldn't help but reply. Just hatched a couple of chicks from Sheri Minkner that are Mottled Frizzled Silkies. I have a feeling they will be super cute! Can't wait to see how they feather out!
