White Leghorns:

I love my white leghorns...The roosters are so proud with their tall comb aright and their posture so perky...Those lean ladies are veritable laying machines...I think some must lay twice a day....They just never stop even in the middle of a freak ice storm in the south!

The babies so yellow and cuddly...The eggs so sumptuous and large....

I love my White leghorns and just wanted to stand up for the forgotten breed.

Anyone else????

I only have two that came from, I don't even remember but they are still laying good so they can stay for now. I'm wanting to get some eggs to hatch but I'm trying to get away from the hatchery stock and get better quality. I am REALLY liking yours. What can you tell me about their lineage?

They came from a really older farmer about 25 miles from us in Tallapoosa Georgia who said he had kept his lines for over 45 years...He died this year I found out when I tried to call and his dear wife did not know the lines..... So I can tell you they are different not a TSC/hatchery line. Pm me and I'll be glad to work you up a price and ship you some eggs!!! Really super flock!

Hi

We had one, and of course her name was Whitey...

I know how original. But we have had her for about 2 years and she always laid even thru winter. She was a real forager. Would take off by herself and find the best places to scratch for bugs.

This morning went out to the pen to check on the girl's water (been freezing here) Found her under the roost dead. Dont know what happened, if the cold got to her, if she fell off her roost or what.

I had to go in and tell DH the bad news. It was one of his favorites.

Now Im thinking when the feed store gets in their leghorns I might just have to go get a couple. Even though we dont need anymore. But a white egg among all the colored ones just makes the dozen so much prettier.

. I just like to say that word. I bought 5 pullets back in September, and I've averaged 5 eggs/day nonstop. I bet there haven't been but a handful of days when one didn't lay. And that's feeding them a mixed diet of layer pellets and a lot of free bread. I prefer the color of brown eggs, but for effeciency, you can't beat the ol' white leghorn.

I used to raise white leghorns in Far SE GA. I ended up selling all of them when my 18 year old daughter died in a car accident (2007). For the last two years I have been raising silkies, and cochins, but I definitely want to get about five leghorns because you just can't beat there laying ability and those wonderful big eggs. You get so spoiled with them, that the store eggs are terrible.

Oh first I'm so sorry about the death of your sweet daughter. I lost a niece in a car accident at that same age...Sigh..My prayers and thoughts are with you. Do you have an incubator or a broody hen, I'd be glad to get you some eggs!!! By the way, I used to travel southeast georgia area - waycross, jekyll, tifton and many smaller towns around there when I had a desk job. Thanks for sharing your experiences about white leghorns.... Farmer Nancy
