There was a lot of over thinking occurring, and different treatments resulted. However, she recovered, and I think she enjoyed her visits to the BIG coop (mine) and she seemed to appreciate my help.

I am a fan of epsom salt too, I use it for long soaks in the winter when it gets dark so early and i have the time. put some lavender oil in and just soak away. Just had a mishap but things got straightened out quick, i went and took Lydia out of the brood coop to look at her foot and leg and give her a soak when i close the door there was a small crack big enough for her chicks to squeeze through all of a sudden there they are at my feet while I'm holding Lydia, well i stick her in the coop thinking she'll call them to her nope she jumps out and start to hop off, well i was able to pick her up and put her into the coop then pick up the chicks and put them in with her. I'm thinking next time i may get dh to help so we can be sure chicks don't escape. She is still not putting any weight on her foot. I sure hope she recovers from this. fl.gif She is my very first hen, we adopted her when she was dumped off where my dh worked and she went into the woods and hatched out 10 chicks, the day she brought them out is when we brought them home, she is probably close to 4 yrs old. We found out later that a woman that lived on the road brought her and dropped her off there because there was already a rooster living in the woods and she wanted him to mate with her. idunno.gif

Lydia is a special chicken, what a story! I hope she heals up quick, maybe tomorrow she'll have rested and improved after a good night sleep.

Happy 4th to everyone!

I continue to feel sorry for myself here - had to carve into the top of my favourite Splash Ameraucana's feet yet again, attempting to get rid of this bumblefoot. VERY discouraging. I've had her on oral antibiotics for more than 2 weeks now and don't appear to be getting anywhere with this hen. I think I pulled more 'gunk' out today than I did the first couple of surgeries - although maybe that's a sign that I AM getting to the root of this finally. My large animal vet has graciously offered to help me with further surgeries which I will take him up on if this doesn't turn things around but you can be sure - she will become worth her weight in gold when that surgery is paid for. <sigh>

Anyway, Broody Naima and the kids are doing fabulously. She's been trying to get them out of the box but they aren't budging so far. So she does her big poop and flap and squawk and returns to them - just to spend most of her time trying to keep them cool! I'm still adding ice cubes to their water several times a day. I'm thinking tomorrow she'll likely get them out. She almost had them convinced today.

Miss Lydia, I've been thinking about you and your broody mama. I hope she's recovering without incident and that she and her brood are thriving. hugs.gif

I'm always shocked how people take something typed on a forum so personally :) If I say it here I have done it. No Bull poop from me. I'm not arguing, I'm stating what I see in MY flock of 10 years.I'm NOT P.C. If that offends please just block me :)

My Henny Penny hatched her very own egg today this morning. yesterday night I candled the two eggs she was sitting on (she started with 7) And that one was viable to me. so this morning I saw this tiny chick and decided with my husband to pull the 3 that I bought so that they don't kill this one as they are double or triple it's size. The hen is still sitting on the egg and I often go to take a pick to this chick as the heat is making him go often lay out. Should I wait at least a week to put others back?
