Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread - Page 1217

3 dead... 7 *alive*. We checked all the white eggs today. The big white one had a huge crack in it, most likely from the hens positioning the eggs. It wasn't moving when we candled it. We broke it, and it was dead. I felt so bad... I could see the little chick and it's baby beak! It was kind of bloody, but I guess that's life. In the three bantam eggs, I saw it move! It ws SO cool! The other two I couldn't see that well, but I think one was dead, but I wasn't sure so we put it back. So, 7 eggs left. I just hope my blue egg hatches!!!

I went back to front of cool and still 3 babies. Wellcaesar LOVES to jump up on me. So as I was leaning in up she flew on my back revealing baby #4 under her!!!!!!!
It got up and started walking around with the others. From the steps of deaths doors it's alive and well!!! I've put a piece of wood across the door of the coop so not other babies can go wandering.....
I feel so lucky to have saved this one..... big_smile.png

I was wondering is there a certan age that a chick has to be to learn to get up a ramp to the shed. Also how long does it usually take them to learn how to?

mine usually take a week to not only get it figured out but also to be strong enough to balance themselves as they go up the ramp

I'm always shocked how people take something typed on a forum so personally :) If I say it here I have done it. No Bull poop from me. I'm not arguing, I'm stating what I see in MY flock of 10 years.I'm NOT P.C. If that offends please just block me :)

Now they are in my coop in seperate dog cages (they were fighting). I got them some fertile eggs to replace their duds. Two eggs were eaten.. Im not sure if the broody ate them or if the other one did. Anyway, Id like to join you guys and get some advice.

Them after I gave them the eggs, she had taken a few but not all of them yet.

The dark one (Toast) is the actual broody. The other one (Wheat) wont sit still long enough to get the eggs warm, let alone hatch them.

Welcome! Broody hens are fun to watch. Keeping them separated right now is good for them and the others too. Broodies will sometimes eat the ones that aren't good. However they may need more protein, so scrambling them up some eggs would help.

Keep us updated on the progress! And congrats!

Ugggg... Defiantly candling TONIGHT. Found a half crushed egg with Summer this afternoon. She had scootched it out in front of her and thankfully the membrane hadn't ruptured but it was rotten through and through. Bleck. I am at day 10 anyway, so it is time.
