So this morning I went down to feed the girls and check on Broody Popcorn... she was clucking which is odd and then I heard it.... a faint chirping and VIOLA baby chick.  I had let her sit on late additions to Caesars Clutch but figured they had all died as they were left mama-less for a few days .... and by my calculations they are all duds.... So somehow somewhere she stole an egg and now she has a baby.  This teenage mom thing is her thing... 2nd time mom in 4 months and she is not even 1 year old?  She is happiest as a mama hen so who am I to tell her no lau.gif  Now how will she tell which baby is hers as it looks just like Caesars :D

I'm always shocked how people take something typed on a forum so personally :) If I say it here I have done it. No Bull poop from me. I'm not arguing, I'm stating what I see in MY flock of 10 years.I'm NOT P.C. If that offends please just block me :)

Im trying to decide if my Ancona bantam is starting to go broody, i went to the hens at about 4 and she came from somewere in the feild and ate for half an hour then i seen her go into a nest (like one i didnt know was there) so i went over ten mins late and lifted her up and the egg was warm, but when i put her down she got off the nest and ran away... is it normal for hens to go and lay eggs at the time? and i thaught they dont warm the eggs when they are just laying

When a hen goes in to lay an egg it takes them a little while.... If there are eggs in the nest they can warm up a bit.  Sometimes when they are thinking about going broody they will linger in the nest a little longer and the eggs will warm up even more.....  My hen sat on my back one day and I was surprised at how warm her feathers were!  Just keep an eye on her .... once they decide to be broody they don't like to stay off the nest for too long!
