Yep---they are supposed to be easy to determine the gender at hatching time...right?

Gary Dean posted the link to this article by Punnett a while back -- and in it he says that the females can have indistinct head spots while the males have more distinct spots...but he also says that the females have very definite stripe patterns and the males have a more diffused stripe.    Here is the article:

Based on that I would think far right possibly pullet because of stripe, center pullet.  Luckily you will know very soon....because of the way they will feather out.  Post back and let us know if you would so we can sharpen out determining skills.  Cute chicks!! Congrats.

Well, I enjoyed my first Cream Legbar egg over easy last night.

My wife said that is was really blue in the morning, but in the evening when I got home it was quite green (some where between a C15 and D8).   Does anyone know if it is possible for the eggs to turn to a darker color after drying? After sitting around for half a day?  My wife says she is going to pull up the color chart right when the eggs are layed and compare later to see if they are darkening on her.  :-)

I don't know about changing after laying, but they did change in the incubator. They seemed to get a bit greener in there.

On the EE braggers thread or the Americauna thread, they said liver health helps with the blue color. The better shape the liver is in the bluer the egg will be. I don't know if this is true since brown combines with blue the make the green, but it may help with color to give them vitamins.

I have thought that the eggs get greener too after they are laid...almost like oxidation or something.

What I read someplace that the substance in carrots will emphasize the blue color.....but I have yet to grind up some carrots and feed to my chickens to test that theory.

How bad would it be to use a pullet without yellow legs or a Roo with a crooked comb? I got cream legbars this spring, I'm down to one trio, the best Rooster dropped dead last week (of course) and the one I have left has correct colored legs, but the comb looks like it might end up crooked, it has a slight bend in it? I don't really want to start out my breeding with culls, but I hate to cull expensive stuff (plus I would have nothing to put the one decent pullet in with). The pullet with the pink legs has a crest too. :(

I had planned to order more this fall to add to my diversity, but it looks like I have nothing to work with here, boo.

Other threads where they are working on improving breeds would say not to worry so much about the leg color it is easy to fix. With SG Dorkings they think combs are something to worry about--More so sprigs and split combs. Most pictures I see of Legbars shows them with big crooked combs though. Are there some without that?

What is the post number of the SOP description? Do we have an SOP in the US yet, or are we working off of the British one?

If the leg color and crooked comb are not dis qualifiers but are points off, and you have nice hens, go ahead and breed them. Cream Legbars will be much less expensive next year, so get some more then and cull hard with the ones you hatch. They will be auto sexing and lay those pretty blue eggs so you should have no trouble selling them to people that want pets and pretty eggs.

It looks like it takes a lot of years which includes showing at competitions to get a breed recognized by the APA. I saw a post from a judge and APA board member that said we need to become APA members also.

Is there a group working on this yet? I am going to breed my crested one with the pullets and see what I hatch next year.

Here is what the UK SOP says about defects and disqualifications for cream legbars:SOP.jpg.

If you want to read the section of the British SOP dealing with legbar without buying the book you can cheat. Go to Amazon and you can look inside the book and read it. It goes from Page 53 to Page 55. This link will take you to page 53 and then you can just click to the next page.

I can't quote the Sherrif's post--something messes it up, probably the image.
